“Holy Unto the Lord”
“So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.” (Mark 2:28) Jesus, after showing Himself to be God by forgiving a man’s sins, (Luke 5:20) now let’s the religious leaders know He is also Lord of their most important Holy day, the Sabbath.
It was God who created and established the Sabbath. “God completed His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day…Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it…” (Genesis 2:2-3) Now the religious leaders had interjected several rules and traditions to be kept on the Sabbath. They took the “On it you shall not do any work…” (Deuteronomy 5:14) and expanded it to restrict more than what God intended. But since God established the Sabbath, it is God who decides what is acceptable in keeping the Sabbath. God’s desire was to “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.” (Exodus 20:8)
When Jesus established the New Covenant through His death and resurrection believers began meeting on Sunday to worship the risen Savior. Wiersbe puts it this way, “The Sabbath is a reminder of the completion of “the old creation” while the Lord’s Day is a reminder of our Lord’s finished work in “the new creation.” God’s desire has always been for His people to stop and keep a day holy to worship Him. Old Covenant: “Therefore you are to observe the sabbath, for it is holy to you.” (Exodus 31:14) New Covenant: “…not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some…” (Hebrews 10:25) Let us continue to keep a day holy to worship our Lord.
