No need to turn off updates. Just edit your Starlink wifi connection and change it to low data mode. In low data mode updates are disabled anyway and you won't have to worry about forgetting to re-enable them.

Good info! I wish more folks would get to the point like you do, instead of 'yammer, yammer, yammer for 20 minutes before getting to the info. Thanks!

Good starter tips for the average user. Another way to reduce data usage is by setting your devices' Wi-Fi profile to "Metered, " which prevents unnecessary app data consumption and pauses automatic OS updates. Additionally, using a custom DNS that blocks ads and trackers can make a big difference, as 10–50% of your data might be consumed by analytics and tracking services.

You should consider changing the WiFi to low data mode when connected to Starlink. That will take care of background data and updates while using that specific WiFi. Go to your phones WiFi menu, click the info icon next to your Starlink WiFi name when connected, change setting to low data mode. 👍🏼

Just took my first trip with Starlink Mini, thank you for the great tips! I also found out that heat (driving from Texas to Colorado) can impact data usage performance.

I also set ( on macbook pro, and galaxy note 9) under wifi options for each wifi network. I set to metered data checkbox or slider.

Also, when watching YouTube, turn off the "auto play" feature.

I have a nvidia shield that I monitor the data on also use data saver option. This weekend I used peacock to stream a football game. The shield was the only thing connected to starlink. The shield showed I used 1.6Gb of data to stream, however Starlink showed that I used 15Gb. Now when I tried using this same method on my hotspot and the data usage was on right on with one another. I don't know why Starlink is reporting more data usage then I actually used. I kinda feel like I am being scammed.

I’m bad about running speed tests. Wasted data.
