After the collapse of the First Sinnoh Region government, Pokémon centers shut down in mass and severe economic decline meant trainers could no longer afford to capture Pokémon and had to set them free. Industrial waste and pollution from the old regime forced many Pokémon out of their natural habitats and into cities. They were forced to get jobs and live as humans. However due to anti Pokémon bias and many being unable to learn humam speech, they often found themselves in extreme poverty. Many had to participate in illegal deadly underground fights just to survive. Team Rocket and other terrorist activities became common as the new weak government lacked the ability to fight them effectively and many humans and Pokémon alike joined their cause for a paycheck.

I like how half of them are toys and abandonned theme park decorations while the other ones are living pokemon who seem to lead miserable human lifestyles

In 1945, the USSR under Stalin’s rule prohibited Pokémon training except by government entities throughout the soviet bloc, rendering all Pokémon wards of the state under the Soviet Pokémon training program. All Pokémon trainers who violated the prohibition were sent to the gulags or executed. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the official state’s Pokémon program was terminated and millions of Pokémon find themselves suddenly left on their own. With very few Pokémon trainers left, Russian Pokémons are left impoverished, living in squalid conditions in cities like Moscow and St Petersburg and struggling with unemployment, poverty, and homelessness.

Can we please get a post soviet breaking bad? Also would love to see this as a fan parody game, we got France, Hawaii and even England based regions, I'd honestly laugh my ass off to see a parody take on what Nintendo would do for a game set in the former eastern block, hell go full on stalker and add some local variations of existing Pokémon warped by radiation

What scares me is the cute features - these characters were never meant to experience war, so there is something alarming about seeing their faces show despair

This matches my taste in art. Cute, lighthearted characters/themes in dark, depressing settings. Also a thing about abandonment. It just feels so off, generates a much stronger feeling than seeing something that you expect to be sad that way. Idk. This is super cool to me…
