“I myself would be cautious about encouraging them to do this, however wronged they have been.”

Former British ambassador to the US and former national security adviser Lord Darroch tells #TimesRadio Ukraine should focus its efforts and ammunition on driving Russian occupation out rather than retaliating by striking Russian soil.

Being cautious is what brought us to the this unacceptable situation.

I take it that this contributor is unaware of the dam destruction when he urges caution. Come on, gloves off! This is no fireside chat.

So Russia can attack Ukraine with impunity...is that it? What kind of logic is that?

How can you put limits on a country that has been invaded by another sovereign nation when they are defending itself! Let them do what they deem required, limited only by the Geneva convention and UN war crimes!

Allow Ukraine to strike critical infrastructure like Russia did to them .Russia should be held no matter what.

Lol. Don't attack the person who's attacking you. It might make him attack you. OK.

The problem with not striking Russian soil, is that there are weapons and munitions manufacture on that soil, which is used to damage Ukraine! It is (IMHO) unreasonable for Ukraine to be forbidden to strike at that "battle infrastructure", while Russia IS NOT FORBIDDEN to strike civilian infrastructure!
Just because Russia demands the right to claim the status quo as being on the acceptable side of an imaginary "red line" that they have unilateraly established, and threatened to enforce it with nuclear weapons, is NOT a very good reason to allow them to proceed.

Elephant in the room is no air cover for troops. Daily missiles into Kyiv means most air defence is located there leaving troops exposed

Ukraine must be cautious AND strategic in attacking Russian territory. They must put Russia in an every increasing dilemma to continue to wage their ineffective campaign in Ukraine or retreat to Russia proper to stop the Ukrainian offensive which will inevitably come since this part of the offensive may be the only bargaining chip that Russia will understand. In other words, when the day comes that negotiations are near, if Russia wants Ukraine to stop attacking Russian assets in Russia, then Russia MUST leave Ukraine, all of it, including Crimea.

Oh! It's a good thing that the Ukrainian leadership has this chap to turn to for military advice! He sounds like a French or German hand-wringer. Caution? No. Give the Ukrainians everything they need and let them give the Russians a proper whipping. Success "looks like" no [living] orcs left in Ukraine. Thank goodness for Ben Wallace! Slava Ukraini! From Champaign, Illinois, USA.

When dealing with an overwhelming genocidal force one have to use all methods available especially when the west isn't willing to join the fight and continues to put limits on aid it's providing. I think any idiot can see how forcing russia to pull their troops and air defence from Ukraine back to russia will safe many Ukrainian lives during the controffensive. russia isn't some sacred cow, they started this war and apart from directly killing civilians Ukraine has a right to fight them as we see is the most optimal. Ffs the west isn't even willing to completely isolate russia, it still has a seat on in security council.

After Russia's outrageous destruction of that dam it's incredibly important that, if at all possible, Ukraine does exactly the same to a Russian dam of similar size and importance. The ONLY thing Russia will understand is that what it does to Ukraine will be quickly done to it. Without suitably punitive retaliation there will definitely be further Russian outrages like this one.

Oh really? You think Putin can be appeased do you? Hasn't the penny dropped yet? Just the kind of monster we're dealing with?

Not gonna watch this guy. I can already tell after the first minute and thirty seconds he has virtually zero real or useful insights, and probably just likes to hear himself talk. The views he is presenting are EXACTLY why this war escalated in the first place: Western leaders self-deterring because "Russia big and has nukes." If Western leaders in 2014 had stood behind their commitments to protect Ukrainian sovereignty THEN (Obama and Cameron to be sure, but also Merkel, Hollande, Renzi, etc.) it could have averted the horror of 2022-23. People like this need to shut their traps. Caution and timidity are NOT going to bring this war to a successful, acceptable, permanent and sustainable peace. This sort of rhetoric is precisely the sort which Putin wants Westerners wallowing.

this mans a fool if he thinks not attacking russian military targets on russian soil is an option for ukraine, all military targets and infrastructure inside russia and belaruse are a threat. there is no point fighting if you loose the "peace". As for A.I. limiting development will just allow china, north korea, iran ect to leap forward AI is another arms race that you have to compete in for survival.
