R.I.P Brian James. A true pioneer, he wrote New Rose, the first British punk single, and shaped the band’s raw sound. Captain Sensible called him “the creator of The Damned”.

I met Brian once in the '80s at the Mean Fiddler, Harlesden. He was there with a Lords of the New Church bandmate, effortlessly cool, every inch the rock star. I said, “Hello, Brian.” He nodded. One of the coolest moments of my then 18-year-old life.

I'm 63 years old and The Damned are still my favorite band. Just saw them play two shows last week here in California, and they remain vital and visceral and insanely talented. It's always a real pleasure and I feel privileged when I get to see them play.

The Damned are one of the best bands ever. They're definitely in my personal top 10 for sure.

Brilliant to see the Damned get the credit they deserve. The first album still stands up today.

Still one of my favourite albums.

I've seen a clip somewhere, where Rat confirms that the guitar is actually a lot cleaner than most would expect and he said that the cymbals appear to make the guitar sound more blown out than it really is.

From what I understand, Brian played a Gibson SG through a Hi-Watt at that time.

Love that Punk is getting recognition, here and the impact it had during the first generation of Punk in the 70s.

One of the fun things about the first two albums (with Brian) is that each member kind of fit their own archetype. Dave was the goth vampire pretty boy, Brian was basically a Ronnie Wood/Steve Marriott Rock Star, the Captain was a geeky throwback sci-fi Rezillos type, and Rat had the more stereotypical "punk" image. Throw in the fact that they could actually play... well that's something special.

British Punk in the 70s definitely had so much iconic music man!

In 1986, a friend of mine from my high school's wrestling a mixed taped with Lords of the New Church, The Vandals, and The Damned, not Phantasmagoria, but New Rose, Smash It Up, and Neat, Neat, Neat. I never looked back. With the release of the Light of the End of the Tunnel, I was hooked and still listen to the band weekly.

Oh my word, this song! It probably, (for me at least), embodies the essence of the UK punk scene more than any other. Absolutely glorious!

That intro is a pleasant musical assault. "Public Image" by P.i.l. por favor!

One of the best drum intros ever. The Damned were just playing loud and fast. There was no formula. It was crank the amps to 11, hit hard, play it fast. Most importantly, don't bore us, get to the chorus.

Muck like "You Really Got Me, " "New Rose" sounded like it came from another planet.

This is a brilliant YouTube video on one of the most important and underrated UK bands. The Damned were fast, loud and raw. They were more entertaining than the Clash and Pistols and seemed so much more genuine. Dave Vanian was such an inspiration that he almost single handedly kicked off the Goth scene in the late 70s/ early 80s. The Damned never get the credit they deserve and are often overlooked as punk pioneers. But they were easily the best of the bunch in 1976/1977 and, as they evolved, they just got better and better MGE, Black Album, Disco Man, etc.
Thank you for an excellent assessment and thank you The Damned for all the concerts I've been to over the years. Long live The Damned.

Oh, and an underrated and under appreciated album(and song), that changed Everything, was Bad Brains' "I Against I". Sonically one of the most incredible albums ever! Ron St. Germain's production on the drums alone made me want to be a better drummer, life changing album

Love The Damned!!! They're legends, yet still criminally underrated and often ignored by punk "gatekeepers" in the media. Thank you for uploading this!

This literally one of the most important tracks in Western music of the past 100 years…so much of what is punk about punk rock is here and the Damned just nail it…a perfect song
