The Tommy Atkins, the polyester of mangoes. I think they're sold in American supermarkets to discourage people from ever buying a mango again. The Keitt and Ataulfo mangos are worlds better, but they're not easy to find.

Gently squeeze them. The softer they are the riper they are. They will also smell nice and sweet.

He didn't talk about the feel or smell of the mango? I researched and found that when it is unripe it is firm. When it is ripe, there is more give i.e. you can squeeze it just a little. Also, when it is ripe it gives off a sweet aromatic smell from the stem. It does not always have to deal with color...Stay on your p's and q's produce man and thanks for the video.

I never liked mangoes growing up. Recently I got a craving for one and I hopped online to look for how to pick ripe ones and I found you! Using your advice we brought some mangoes home and they were the tastiest fruit I have had in a long time. Thank you for putting out these videos! I am totally your fangirl now!

Smell and softness are better indicators of ripeness.

I had a green one and, impatiant as I am, ate it anyway. It was surprisingly ripe on the inside! I guess that might have just been a type of mango.

They can be. Any mango that gets nice and ripe I think could be cut up with a plastic knife, but when they are firm you need a good sharp steel one.

This might sound weird, but another way (in addition to its color and feel in my hand) is to lightly bite the mango. You can feel how soft its flesh is through the skin and its pretty easy to tell if its not ripe because it'll be a lot firmer. Obviously don't need to bite through the skin, just enough to feel the firmness with your teeth, something about it makes it a lot more accurate that feeling with your hands imho.

this was a horrible video explanation of when a mango is ripe.

Most mangoes are rpine when they are soft to gentle touch but still springy enough to return, if the mango emits it's scent the stronger it is the more ripe it is... if you can smell it form the distance it's most likely will be overriping. And now you know.
