The five basic tastes are:
1. Sweet 🍭
2. Sour 🍋
3. Salty 🥨
4. Sharp 🌶️ (spicy)
5. Savory 🍜 (umami)

There are approximately 2, 000 to 4, 000 taste buds on the human tongue, and each taste bud contains 50-100 taste receptors. This means we have around 100, 000 to 400, 000 taste receptors on our tongue!

Back in my day it was called savory. But apparently some research showed savory was replaced with umami because it was more accurate of a term than savory.

I put msg in every soup, gravy, and pasta sauce it kicks up the flavor so well.

Meth and MSG came from Nippon. Such a progressive, conservative and industrious culture with a seemingly forgotten underbelly of OG crookedness

As much as I love your channel, you really made this the crack cocaine explanation of umami. i.e. you horribly botched this one.

....this is what they add to the Lays, cheetos and all the processed nasty food. SIlently they hide it from the shops, as the corpos want this "taste booster" for themselves. Still remember some adds on old 50s magazines advertising "Ajinomoto". Nobody wonders why isnt in the shelves?..

Only recently I came across an article spouting the nonsense of the "newly discovered taste" called "umami". This is especially absurd as I had first seen a similar article a good 20 years ago now. An article I initially fell for, until I realized that "umami" is in fact another name for "savoury", which of course isn't a new discovery whatsoever.

I can not taste msg at all. My roommate cook would go on about it, but whenever he put it in his food I would taste nothing if not a little worse with the msg.

I met Umami a while back and we got engaged. But you know, as she aged things went sour and didn't look so good.

Tomatoes growing in Alabama red clay are very meaty and savory tasting especially the heirloom varieties. They are gooood. Mmm. lol. Really

It also winds your heart up, and accelerates its action.
I used to wonder why when I went to bed, after a chinese takeaway meal, my heart was pounding like mad.
Then I found out the MSG connection.
I requested ''No MSG'' with my takeaways, and the problem didn't reoccur.
