BORN PRIMITIVE SAVAGE 1 REVIEW | Good First Model?

The Born Primitive Savage 1 is the "new kid on the block" in the context of cross-training shoes built for CrossFit and lifting.

This model had a lot of hype behind it, especially as a more "minimalist" or "traditional" training shoe built for CrossFit-focused training. To be honest, this shoe reminds me of models like the Reebok Nano 2.0.

In my Born Primitive Savage 1 review, I'll cover the key details you should know before buying this model.

4:29 Performance Assessment

Overall, I'm a fan of the Born Primitive Savage 1 and I think it's a good first pass for Born Primitive in the world of training shoes.

This shoe's simplistic construction took me back to some of the older models that I really resonate with and I like their wider fit.

I like how brands are now incresing the width in their model toeboxes. Reebok, Nike, we're waiting for you...

Freakin love this shoe, BP has done a stella job imo, stable, grippy, comfy, minimalist, ngl that tongue does piss me off a bit though.. but overall I think itll replace my haze trainers and older nanos in the long term, i haven't tried then for rope climbs yet due to them feeling a little flexible and less rigid like the nano X3 sole.. great review jake 💯

Ended up grabbing the 235v3s about a month before these were released.
Surprisingly my wide flat feet are doing good with them. So responsive and lightweight. Love em.
But, seeing the toe box on these makes me want a wider toe box again.

I appreciated that the two comparisons you made towards the end of the video are also all black 😂

I just got a pair and I’ve definitely noticed the issue with the tongue digging into the ankle. I’m hoping it eventually breaks in because I like how they fit and perform everywhere else.

I like the shoe for lifting. One of the areas that is not for me are planks where the shoe does not bend at the toe as comfortable as others such as Nike Metcon 8 that has a break on the sole. I like the BP over the Metcon for lifting though.

Finally, a solid review of this pair. Pleasantly surprised as I was afraid these would be pure hype.

So, you mentioned these are barefoot-ish with good ground feel, but do they have noticeably more cushion than say a pair of Vivos? I bought and returned Vivos: I absolutely cannot tolerate no cushion. My feet and knees hurt for weeks.

If these are much better, I may throw a pair of Innov8 Boomerang insoles and go with it. That grippy outsole is inspiring!

Thanks for all the hard work, my man.

Hi Jake. So grateful for your channel it's my go to! There's not many in depth and precise reviews on youtube like yours, so I really appreciate it. I really need your help in deciding between these and the Reebok Nano 2.0. My workouts are mostly lifting/crossfit based with minimal cardio 1-2 times per week, like jump rope or 10 mins of running. Which ones would you recommend?

Man, trying to decide between these and the Strk movement Haze Trainer. I like the toe box in both.

I got the savage 1 and haze trainer both in an 11. I think the savage is less snug but I don’t mind that. But the haze trainer feels like the sole is softer. I haven’t done much in them yet besides walking around the block and a few crossovers in each. They both feel like they will be great shoes for me. The haze trainer is a little more snug on top but width is great on both

I ended up ordering these and 2 days later went out and got the Nike Free Metcons and really like those. Now im torn on which ones to return. I lift 3-4 days a week but also do HIIT workouts a couple times a week.

Speed TR was my favorite shoes I've trained in. Miss them. Just ordered the Savage 1 so hopefully that comparison is good

Hey Jake! I’ve been working out with Xeroes and Vivos for a while now but after a weekend hiking on concrete, I’m in need of a bit more cushioning. Do you know what the best wide toe box zero drop shoe with a cushioning sole would be? How thin is the sole on those savage 1 ?

I’ve been trying to use Altra Solstice 2 for over a year now and as much as I like the idea behind them they just aren’t working for me. The fit is just odd, crazy low volune. Even if I take out the insoles they feel snug in an uncomfortable way although plenty roomy in toe box area. Maybe upper materials aren’t the best choice for snug fitting shoe? How do these compare fit wise?

Hi Jake, great review. a few ?s please. So..if you are someone like me who wants a more minimalist shoe w/ a wide toe box BUT also wants casual comfort, walking around wear all day comfort, HIIT, 1-3 mile running what would you recommend? i also would love it if i could play table tennis and pickleball (competitively) in it. For these sports, i like a lighter, lower to the ground feel, narrow in the mid but wide in the toes.... w/ lateral maneuverability...seems like these might work. I'm also looking at the Topo ST-5 and Altra Solstice shoes. suggestion? thanks!

Hi Jake I see that they have some color ways back in stock for the savage 1. I just bought a pair of rerelease nano 2.0s and I was curious how to toe box compare between the two. Any insight? Savage 1s seem very similar to the nano 2s.
