A Club Sandwich (1909) on Sandwiches of History

Last time we visited the Good Housekeeping Woman's Home Cook Book of 1909 we were treated to the Toasted Sandwich. Which was nothing more than two pieces of bread buttered, pressed together, and toasted. And the overwhelming reaction was “why did this need a recipe?” Well, just to show you it’s not all dumb sandwich recipes in this book, today I am taking on the A Club Sandwich. Now, did the authors intend to name it A Club Sandwich or did they merely intend it as “by the way?” As in, “here is a recipe for a club sandwich.” My money is on the latter but being the goofball I am, I stuck with the former in the video. I left the sandwich in history, in my absence the sandwich continued forward. Now that I have returned I realized my foolish ways. For, it was not the sandwich I was leaving behind, it was the sandwich that left me behind.

A lot of club sandwiches would improve without the third slice of bread. Kudos on that one. Before it closed due to COVID, the revered Pacific Dining Car in LA had the best club sandwich: two slices toast, freshly cooked chicken, roast beef from their oven, freshly cooked bacon, tomato, lettuce and mayo. A beautiful thing. [I can't remember if there was avocado.]

I love your videos. Do you clean the floor after every video? Are you angry at plates? hehhehhe Does your wife come in afterward and say, why are there always crumbs on the floor? LOL To me, this is a chicken club sandwich (which you turned into a "California" Chicken Club Sandwich). I always thought of club sandwiches as turkey, ham, cheese, bacon, mayo, tomato, and lettuce as a club. Looked good before the plus up to me!
