Visegrad is a lovely town located on the Drina River in Republika Srpska, an entity of Bosnia and Herzegovina. This town became known to the world after Nobel Prize winner (1961) Ivo Andric published the historical novel "The Bridge on the Drina".
The Old Stone Bridge from the 16th century, an endowment of Grand Vizier Mehmed Pasha Sokolovic, is one of the most important national monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina and was entered into the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. In the ascendant of his powers, Grand Vizier Mehmed Pasha Sokolovic ordered the most beautiful bridge to be built in Visegrad on the Drina River. The principal architect of the bridge was Mimar Sinan, the greatest architect of the Ottoman Empire. The bridge of Mehmed Pasha Sokolovic is an excellent example of Ottoman architecture. The bridge spans 180 meters in length and is 6 meters wide. It is supported by 11 arches above the river and is considered the top attraction in Visegrad. Tourists visiting Bosnia and Herzegovina often make a stop at this bridge. Another popular tourist attraction nearby is Andricgrad, created by the famous film director Emir Kusturica. The works and characters of the Nobel Prize-winning writer Ivo Andric inspired Andricgrad. The city has a mix of different architectural styles that have evolved throughout the history of this area, including Byzantine, Ottoman, Renaissance, and Classicism. Some of the main objects of Andricgrad are the Ivo Andric Institute, Memorial House, Fine Arts Academy, Centre for Slavic Languages, Town Hall, Multiplex cinema, Renaissance theatre, restaurants, coffee bars and souvenir shops. After opening, it became one of the top things to see in Visegrad.
