Dr. John Vidale: The Big One: Cascadia’s Megaquake

As residents of the Pacific Northwest, we are all familiar with stories of Seattle’s vulnerability to seismic activity. And we certainly recall the haunting 2015 New Yorker article asserting that our region is long-overdue for “the big one.” To help contextualize these fears and delve into the science beneath the threat of earthquakes, we present Dr. John Vidale—seismologist at UW’s College of the Environment and leader for several years of UW’s M9 Project. Dr. Vidale’s works lends insight on the likelihood of such a tremor, and offers a prognosis on the impact a giant coastal quake could have on Seattle’s downtown.

Vidale lends his rarefied expertise to assuage some of our fears while espousing the continued need for disaster-preparedness, as well as revealing his thoughts on implementing early warning technologies in the Pacific Northwest to grant us precious time to react before the shaking starts.

Excellent presentation - I wonder if we will get a slow slip before the cascadia rupture and how it will differ from the 14 month cycle that runs down the slow slip zone. This presentation made me go and look at the M9 Project websites on the PNSN resources.

It is a shame that ShakeAlert is not shared to people outside the US. Japan allows it and I get alerts on my phone and computers. I also use it on my live streams. I remember when Japan sent out that false Mag 9 I nearly dropped everything and started monitoring all the Japanese stations.

1.05 into the video past one hour mark the professors uses the word "prediction" huh? i know quite a few people in New Zealand who would be butt hurt that quakes can be predicted . be it even 10 years into the future. the difference with Dutchsisne is a different method by watching quakes the seismic energy travels in a certain pattern and cane be forecasted like the weather, yes Dutchsinse is at the early states but hes not using some sooper dooper computer to do the work. perhaps someone out there can think about how dutchsinse forecasts short term up to 10 days and make a model based on the flow of seismic pressure that drops off earthquakes, then have a computer programme that learns but all earthquakes form the year dot would have to be input in it even the tiny tremors all data, i bet when the start place is picked that computer programme would soon learn and see the patterns for the future.

Have to admire the intricacies and passion obviously involved, but I call Bullshit... Dutchsinse from Dutchsinse.com and YouTube is reliably and accurately forecasting earthquake on a weekly basis...
Based on entirely on monitoring deep earthquakes and following the upwelling pressure as it spreads out and follows specific paths, and the earthquakes predictably fill in the "Silent Zones". It's an amazing discovery and he's an amazing researcher.
And Good Olympia Professor Vitale himself has on a number of occasions actually trolled Dutchsinse publicly, calling him a fraud, going so far as too telling folks not to support him financially...then? Oh, He's just lucky?!?
Wow.
Professor Vidale should consider how many times the entire theory on something was dead wrong?
Time to wake up and smell there future. Besides, Old Cascadia I'd so ripe to ripe open...the pressure is so intense. I can FEEL the waves of pressure shaking and undulating under me...it's like being on a small boat heading into.a BIG STORM.
