Homestuck - The Carnival x Deltarune - The Circus [Gamzee Jevil 🎷📖]

In my next episode of "DELTARUNE IS A HOMESTUCK", let's look at Homestuck' The Carnival compared with Delta Rune's "The Circus". These are the respective prelude musics for Homestuck's Gamzee Makara and Deltarune's Jevil...both agents associated with clowns, jokers, jesters, and insanity through the comparative concepts of "rage" and "chaos".

Apart from the surface similarities (clowns, insane, etc.,) I think it's interesting how both of these characters' insanity clue into similar concepts. For both Gamzee and Jevil, there is a sense that their insanity comes from knowing too much about the artificiality of their worlds. This gives them power and unpredictability. But what they do further is they inspire us, the observer, to engage in their insanity. Whereas games and other media are ostensibly trying to get us "lost in the world," these characters force us to confront that these worlds are, in fact, artificial. We try to get "secrets" that we can only really know about if we understand that these media are fake.

Ever since the epilogues, all I can do is think of Gamzee as depressed. He is not free, as much as he'd like to be. There is one narrative he cannot escape from, and it is one his mind has constructed. Since I consider the Candy epilogue to be a collaboration between Calliope and Gamzee, this is literal. He's earned his place on the paradise planet but he can't imagine a narrative where he can redeem himself. His think pan is broken. Anyone who thinks he isn't full of shit is a gullible sucker and enabler. Not even Jane, the person on Earth C that he's closest to, can take his personal traumas seriously, because he can't take his own traumas seriously. He can take recourse in pleasures of the flesh such as sopor and milk, but it won't solve his abandonment issues.

But serious, just imagine a parody of the [S] Attempt rare and highly dangerous 5x SHOWDOWN COMBO with the deltarune characters.

I owe you an apology. When I first watched this video I thought it was a bit of a stretch to say the source of Gamzee's madness was realizing the true nature of reality as an artificial story. I thought he just had a meltdown over the blasphemous nature of the ICP video and devolved into insane murder mode from there. But Homestuck Book 5 (covering Act 5 Act 1 part 1) just came out and in the author notes Hussie pretty much confirms that your take was Gamzee's motivation after seeing the ICP video. He realized that he himself, as well as his entire bloodcaste and religion, were just a parody of the things he'd held sacred his own life - and were intentionally designed that way by some external author. And he spent the rest of the story Raging against the narrative via seemingly random and incomprehensible acts.

Very interesting how Gamzee ties into Jevil's character. They both see the world as a game and try to entertain, comedy through tragedy. Jevil's desire for "freedom" goes well with Gamzee's aspect which is symbolized by the destruction of upper authority and revolution according to the extended zodiac.

The monologue at the bottom is a pretty insightful deconstruction of the Aspect of Rage and its interplay with Hope. Very well done sir.
