As someone who has working in the publishing industry, I can’t see how they can promise to pay authors double. The sales from books go directly to the publisher who then gives a cut of the profits to the author. Whatever the agreed upon contracted amount is. Now obviously for bigger authors such as your Stephen Kings, they have much better negotiating power. Unless these authors are self publishing, this in not a promise that can be logically made.

As an Indie Author who's raised my kids selling my books, this option is not double from anything I earn. The so called partnership with authors doesn't seem reasonable at all to me. Their specifics aren't clear, the information doesn't align with anything that works for all authors. This makes zero sense to me as an author partnership. (that's point a)
Point 'B' - I can't believe they would claim 'safe space' then put out the crap they did. Thank you so much for doing this video Georgia.

I honesty wish they would translate more LGBTQ+ books from other languages. Because there are so many out there that the hasn't reached a bigger audience.

For example there is this one trilogy from Sweden called 'Torka aldrig tårar utan handskar' (eng: Don't Ever Wipe Tears Without Gloves) by Jonas Gardell. It's all about the AIDS crisis in Stockholm during the 80s. We mainly follow Benjamin who comes from a family that is active members of the Jehovah Witness and he has to hide his true identity from everyone in his life. While we also follow another man called Rasmus who comes from a smaller down and is they 'weird' kid do to his sexuality. He moves to Stockholm to in order to be more like himself. Benjamin and Rasmus meets the first time at a guys house called Paul. He is the center of the party and he basically takes them under his wings and into his gang of gay friends etc he calls "bög kollektivet" (Eng: 'The gay collective'. The book gives the reader a very raw and real depiction of the AIDS crisis when it came to Sweden and how it slowly killed the members of this friend group and others in the country. I honestly cried many times reading the books and while watching TV-series which it also was adapted to.

I haven't seen a English translation of it and I honestly think it should be translated!

Here's what happened, I translated it into English from grifter speak for you -

"We went to Ingram (dropshipper) and signed a contract that said we would sell their entire catalog in order to get a big discount. Then we made up the difference up by offering fluff & bullshit (bookclub, baked in 'discount'). This was our plan to raise author fees, make lots of money, and compete with Amazon. Too bad we were too blinded by the dollar signs to stop and think what selling every book would actually mean. Now we've torpedoed our brand. Oops!"

I work in a public library (US) that has a business relationship with Ingram. I can tell you that Ingram is not charging them anywhere near those prices. I can understand wanting to broaden the scope of materials offered, however, Ingram offers curated lists that can be used to help with purchasing. So, it would be easy enough to have Ingram set up lists that only include things that meet the companies' stated values. Ingram does charge for this service but if you are not going to individually vet the products you offer then paying for a service to do it for you is a must.

You think US bookstore prices are bad? Wait until you see what they charge for textbooks in college. Texts can easily cost over $300, and the school tries to gaslight students into thinking that's reasonable. It's a smaller part of why college costs so much here, but when you're scrambling to find $600-$800 out of pocket every term, it doesn't feel like a small barrier.

I’m not really into book content but I hopped over from your other channel and I found this so interesting! Would definitely watch more essay style videos about books from you :)

This is crazy. I had to go to the site to check it for myself that they really did sell all those books and oh wow. Great video, thank you for all the research. Also I love the channel name change by the way. It brought me joy when I saw it. :3

Wait - for $5 a month, you get books for half price AND authors are paid twice as much AND proceeds from flagged books are donated? What kind of maths defying business is this?

Ru has been transphobic in the past, can't say any of this is surprising as a queer non binary person this is just starting to become the norm :/

How much are books in the UK? They’re even more expensive in Canada than they are in the states. It’s awful.

I totally get what you are saying about Ru, love what he has done in terms of pushing queer media to a larger platform. However there is a lot of poor casting choices made in drag race and why I prefer the Boulet Brothers on Dragula for being more inclusive on their show.

That being said I am going to the Manchester event for Ru's book, call me a hypocrite but I'm intrigued 😅 Would love to see an analysis video from you once you've read it.

Thanks for the fantastic video as always, Georgia! ❤ This is a prime example of being so open-minded that your brain falls out. How did it not occur to them it was problematic to actively contribute to the financial gain of authors of hateful and harmful books? The whole point of the store originally was that while those authors are being sold everywhere, a lot of LGBTQ+ books are being banned. Rainbow capitalism is the worst, ughh. Good to see they are doing sg to rectify the situation but what an unforced error.

Disappointed but absolutely not surprised at all.

I'll give him credit for the good stuff he did but he's done a lot of harm to the queer community. I think he's only apologized when it affected his bottom line. Time to move on and look for new and better queeros...
