Contessa's "big boat" is the 32. And they sells expensive because it's hard to find a small boat of this pedigree. John Kretschmer rounded Cape Horn in one. Harry Allaway and Kathy Claydon won the Fastnet. In the Fastnet tragedy of 1979 a Contessa 32 finished as only boar in its class. There is multiple solo circumnavigations – including around Cape Horn. The older sister, the even smaller Contessa 26 has a similar impressive blue water pedigree – with Tania Aebi's circumnavigation being the most famous. In short: that's the books that get people dreaming to do circumnavigation. Additionally, the hull is solid fibreglass. Only the decks are cored. The 32 was although built in big numbers (800 plus) (and is built again new) – so there is a good class association, a lot of class racing in Europe especially, with many owners, and that can proof invaluable on refits. The 35s and larger are rarer and never reached quite the reputation.

I think, these factors explain the price quite a bit. The 32s are very sleek, capable, classic yachts. And for dreamers, who dream of those daredevils that dream of sailing wild rather than anchoring in fancy places, the boat rings many bells. Who isn't inspired by Willy Kerr or John Kretschmer. :)

Good guy. . . . I am still blown away that this market has arisen so people can make decent money filming themselves sailing. I know their numbers are not many, but some of them started out so young and are building a business.

At 19 he sailed his refit 28-footer from Hawaii to The Promised Land and has been bopping around a couple of years now.

Always good to see Erik get some respect...and the TV quote was from the GI Joe TV cartoon (which was lame compared to the classic 60s/70s stuff I grew up on, but whatever).
