Pregnancy-related death rates are the highest in 60 years, and for Black women, it's become a literal life-or-death situation. According to the CDC, Black women are three times more likely to suffer serious pregnancy complications than White women. On Friday, Vice President Kamala Harris spoke about the U.S. black maternal mortality crisis at the annual Essence Fest forum in New Orleans.

Black women in general are out of pocket these days. My grandma was born in 1923. She was dirt poor, uneducated, black, female and an orphan and still Made it. It must have been tough for her to marry and army sergeant. Today women do nothing but COMPLAIN!

Thank you for highlighting this issue, it’s very true and important to emphasize. I had a black colleague that requested birth control pills and she wasn’t sleeping with anyone but needed it to regulate her menstruation, but her doctors made her do all of these tests, meanwhile her white peers received the pills with no problem. It was a sad fact and that was just birth control pills

These comments show that this is true. The racism in this country is sickening.

Totally supportive - BUT what's this "birthing person" thing? What's happened to "woman"?

Maybe if you increased your modesty, your risk of pregnancy related deaths would decrease.

Just a thought.

Solve the single motherhood crisis in black America, and then all the other social pathologies will decrease. This is the foundational issue.

The State should pay people to abort. $500.

I think this will be an ongoing issue til the end of time. All we can do as Black women is self advocate and do our best to get those closest to us to help advocate for us on our behalf. We also have to hope and pray that we've selected a good OBGYN that isn't biased and most importantly we have to hold these practitioners, nurses, and doctors accountable in the event of negligence. Up and to including suing them if something goes wrong.

The difficulty lies in overuse of marijuana during pregnancy and being a teenager as young as 15. It's a problem that needs to be addressed.
