It's obvious to me that a comfortable majority of these comments are responding to the title rather than the substance of the video. Disturbing. 🤔

10 years later, when windows starts using linux kernel, people are going to say we use linux heck yeahh. And us the long time users will change our slogan from "switch to linux" to "switch to GNU/Linux" xD

No. It will be something like Android, where the end user will still be completely locked out.

I can only see windows among the other linux distros as an Among Us impostor meme

I can't imagine that very many end-users are purchasing stand alone versions of Windows anymore - thus Microsoft's majority income for Windows is through OEM installations. If Microsoft were to transition to a Linux kernel with a NT emulation layer (or whatever you want to call it), I can see how they would be able to dramatically reduce the cost of maintaining Windows (as they could just rely on the Linux developers for that) and just focus on the emulation layer (until it is no longer necessary). They could still charge the OEM's for the OS and still make money - implementing a revenue model for Windows similar to RedHat would probably work for them. It seems like a no-brainer for Microsoft - less development costs, better security, still able to run proprietary Windows software, same or better income. With the fragmentation of the Linux desktop environment (and also distribution fragmentation), Microsoft has the opportunity to become THE Linux distribution for everyone, since most people who use Windows wouldn't even know that Windows had become a Linux distro.

If windows becomes Linux, will it bring all of the viruses with it?

Would never use "Windows" again, but it would probably increase compatibility with Linux so I see it as a good thing.

Will history repeat itself in some way?
I'm scared they'll do something similar they did with that DOS stuff.
DR-DOS and FREEDOS can run DOS applications just like MS-DOS but Microsoft was upset and they made you be able to only use Windows 3.1 on MS-DOS and then people ran out to buy copies of Windows 3.1 and MS-DOS! And Microsoft was really happy! D:

I've often wondered if Microsoft would go this way. When Windows Phone headed into decline a few years back, I accurately predicted that Microsoft's next phone would be an Android device, with some branding and customisation.
But I think the biggest hurdle for the desktop OS is intellectual property and licensing - I just don't quite see Microsoft implementing an open-source kernel, and being happy about keeping it open-source - we've seen it before when big commercial companies take on open source software and try to make it into something proprietary

Microsoft will just do what Apple does with MacOS. A Unix Kernel with Windows Software. Boring really.

Possible... But why would I want to add telemetry, keyloggers and spywares that calls home to Miro$oft to my Linux distro?

I sincerely doubt it. This feels more like late embrace / early extend phase of that rather infamous Microsoft stratagem.

Just my 2 cents about revenue:

Red Hat Enterprise Linux is open source AND paid software. Microsoft can use this business model too.

"Embrace, extend and extinguish" is Microsoft's strategy in the past, the present and in the future. Right now, they're in the honeymoon phase with open source. Don't be fooled!

Embrace, extend, and extinguish. Along the same lines as Microsoft seemingly buying a publisher in decline for 7.2 billion but actually buying the only mainstream devs using Vulcan exclusively, this is a play to ultimately extinguish open source.

well "yes" i been saying this for a while. There are several hurdles however, but it comes down to "backwards compatibility". for that all currently applications and driver will need to work, which will need to bring patches to the kernel. they would probably also want a static ABI for their driver which linux has intentionally doesn't have. So they'll have to maintain a fork. meanwhile they'll keep what allows windows software and hardware to work proprietary. so in the end it won't bring the windows ecosystem to linux, instead it would become what android is now

In my opinion, the Windows 10X concept was all about that. In the end, MS Linux will certainly be akin to Android and ChromeOS, being technically Linux but without the root access nor the freedom. You cannot compile Linux apps through terminal in Android, you won't be able in this Linux Windows either

Valve buys Wine and Microsoft can't buy Valve because of Monopoly stuff. Could be a possibility.
