Faith Healing Debunked

Does praying work? Is prayer for healing effective? Why do people lie about miracles? Why do so many of these miraculous anecdotes spread like wildfire? Aside from misdiagnoses, the placebo effect, and spontaneous remission that occurs naturally, many people share faith healing stories of people who were never really healed (without knowing it was just adrenaline or something equally explainable), and others feel obligated to lie for god in order to lead people to him. But miracles don't happen. Lying about them is dishonest, and you don't have to lie anymore.

I went to a church service once where the pastor asked everyone to come forward who wanted to be closer to God. Of course, everyone came forward. And one by one each person was "slain in the spirit" falling to the ground, groaning, and speaking in tongues. When he got to me, I felt nothing so I just stood there. This made him mad. He tried to push me down and I glared at him. He glared back. Then he moved on. But he came back to me twice, each time trying to get me to fall down. But I didn't feel a damn thing. And it made me question myself and everyone in that room. Was it just me? Or was everyone else just pretending? I didn't deconvert for many more years after that, but that was the last day I believed being slain in the spirit was a thing.

The final nail in the faith coffin for me was when a friend's infant was murdered by the child's father. I could see no reason why a benevolent god would allow that to happen, and every time someone said "God needed another angel" I wanted to punch them. I finally snapped when someone said " It's all part of God's plan, " to which I replied he needed to get another plan because this one sucks.

"Don't pretend to know things you don't." If I could smash one sentence into every human beings brain, this would be at the top of my list. Not only on topics of religion, but also politics, ethics and science.

If faith healers are so great why don't they work at hospitals?

Just say no to religion. There's so much more happiness in critical thinking and reality.

I love this channel so much. You moved me to tears. Religion can be so cruel. Blaming innocent people for being sick because of lack of faith is so immoral. 😭😭😭

I remember a Muslim friend of mine started telling me about a miracle and I pointed out naturalism and that super unlikely events HAVE to happen to someone. He instantly started crying and admitted he didn't believe. He was a closeted atheist. We spoke for hours, clearing up any little question he had about atheism etc. He said he was scared of being atheist for being lonely. I pointed him to several atheist groups at uni aswell as to the thousands of hours of great atheist footage of youtube.

I also pointed him towards intellectual atheists like Hitchens. He is almost more atheistic than me these days. Point is, not even the ones who say they believe in Monotheism can possibly believe in it. Most people are deist's or pantheist's deep down.

Great vid!

The hardest prison to escape is in your mind and when you suffer and add more layers of prisons outside of your mind then you'll never be free until you look deep down inside your consciousness, and awake from the delusion and blissful ignorance and finally be totally liberated and be the masters of your own life. Thanks H-K

I have a story, a priest trying to take the devil out of me, squeezing my head and screaming, meanwhile whispered close to my shoulder to say "yes" then he asked if I was better. Being a kid and have a large crowd in front of me, as a kid is very easy to be deceived and feel pressured by a big room full of adults. After that I was still the same, turns out that I am autistic and that the weird behavour I had has a kid, was normal for someone with autism :)

I've also been told by my family that God didn't make me straight because I didn't have enough faith.
Maybe it's because I didn't need to be "healed"?

This is a truly beautiful video.
I really enjoy the perspective and peacefulness you portray, and how us atheists really are. Normal, good people.

Your approach to these topics is one of the bests I've seen. You show compassion for those who have been fooled and at the same time you try to lead them to logic. Not that I disagree with the idea of what other fellow critical thinkers have, but the approach is certainly important, no one likes feeling dumb and the more they feel it the more they want to reject it. (Pardon my english, not my first language)

On my Mormon mission they asked me to heal someone with a priesthood blessing. That is when I realized vividly that I probably wasn't Mormon, so I refused and let the other elders do the blessing.

As a disabled person, I find the notion of faith healing insulting. Are they implying that every person with a disability is in fact an unrepentant sinner? Imagine having a disability from birth and being told it's your fault (though they'll seldom be that blunt).

Of course, apologists will do a quick theological sidestep and say God wanted me to be this way to inspire others--which in a way is more insulting than the first statement. I'm a person, not a living object lesson.

Love how this guy doesn't sound pissed-off or condescending like a lot of atheist/skeptic YouTubers. He legitimately sounds concerned for how you find purpose and fulfillment in life.

I relate to this. I thought I was healed from lactose intolerance when I was a teen. I went to get ice cream and felt totally fine. Later in life I learned that kids can grow out of it, which is probably what happened since I hadn't had lactose in a long time. On the other hand, God never healed my chronic headaches and shoulder pain, or the cancer that killed my grandmother and my future mother in law, who both passed away brutally in their 50s. 😕
