Medicare Supplements (Medigap)

When is Medigap insurance underwriting required?
If the first time you enroll in Medicare Supplement Plan is AFTER your initial Open Enrollment Period, Medigap underwriting is required. In other words, you did NOT apply for Medicare during your initial OEP.
When you switch to a different Medigap Plan after your initial Open Enrollment Period, then underwriting is required.
Likewise, when you switch from Medicare Advantage Plan to Medigap Plan after your initial OEP, then underwriting is required.

Mutual of Omaha has been offering Medicare Supplement Plans for over 50 years. Mutual of Omaha offers Medicare Supplement Plan F, Plan G and the Plan N. In some states, Mutual of Omaha also offers a High Deductible Plan F or G option as well.

Wonderful information for someone looking at Mutual of Omaha Medicare Supplement coverage

I bought a Mutual of Omaha Supplement and it was a big mistake! Over the past five years, the rate increases have averaged 15.9% annually. I started at $102.90 and five years later I'm at $215.46 a month. And the reason for this is because the "closed the book" on my plan. I have since learned that this is a common trick pulled by Mutual of Omaha in order to show low starting rates. A very deceptive practice. AVOID MUTUAL OF OMAHA.

My sister just switched from Transamerica Plan G to Mutual of Omaha Plan N. She sailed through underwriting and her monthly premium went from $176 with Transamerica to $112 with MoO.

Great information. Thank you. Will you do the other companies too? I really appreciate seeing the actual form and questions along with your explanation of what the result of answering yes would be.

What if you have been enrolled in Medicare A&B for some years, but it was "secondary coverage" to a spouses' employment health insurance so no supplemental plan was ever purchased. Would that person (the Medicare spouse) be elgible for a "special enrollment" in a supplemental plan when the spouse retires and both lose that coverage? Would medical underwriting be required in that instance? Might that vary by company?
