Is Necromancy Creeping into The Church? An Ex-New Ager Weighs in, with Doreen Virtue

As a popular New Age teacher, Doreen Virtue became the top-selling New Age author at the top New Age Publishing company. She practiced Tarot cards and necromancy, even offering free readings to parents who had recently lost their children. She believed she was doing God’s work until God saved her and she trusted in Christ. In 2017, she renounced her former New Age works, and now helps Christians spot New Age teachings that are coming into the church. She joins the podcast today to share concerns she has about necromancy (communicating with the dead) being practiced by Evangelical Christians and leaders.

This was difficult to listen to, but very necessary. I lost my husband due to complications from a car accident in December 2023 and then my mom 60 days later. Right after my husband passed away I prayed that the Lord would give me a dream and I did have one dream that same night. It was very vivid but brought me comfort so I feel mixed about it but after listening to this podcast, I feel like the Lord is warning me to be very, very careful and is protecting me from going down a dangerous path. I listened to this podcast while traveling today and took some time to pray, Talk to the Lord and repent and continue to ask for wisdom and discernment as I navigate this journey I appreciate you, Alisa and Doreen.

I rarely listen to an hour long podcast episode. But this one fascinated me. I am a retired missionary pastor. I have met many people through the years who have been deceived by this. It my retirement, I work with people in the Paranormal community. Everything from Bigfoot to ghosts. I know through social media hundreds of Christians who who seek to talk with dead loved ones. Thank you both for being clear on Necromancy. You are very much appreciated!! God is so good.

Hallelujah The daily jesus devotional has been a huge part of my transformation, God is good 🙌🏻🙌🏻. I was owing a loan of $49, 000 to the bank for my son's brain surgery, Now I'm no longer in debt after I invested $11, 000 and got my payout of $290, 500 every month…God bless Mrs Susan Jane Christy ❤️

I lost my mom 2 years ago. She was my best, and at times my only friend for much of my life. Not a day goes by that I don't miss her, but I cry out to God, not to her. I pray to thank God for all the decades I got to spend with her. I thank Him for all the things she taught me and how she equipped me to live this life without her by instilling in me a deep love for the Lord, and teaching me to trust in Him in my hurting and that He will one day wipe away all my tears. I thank Him for giving me to a loving and kind mother who was a faithful Christian, and for the comfort in knowing we will be reunited in eternity, to worship our God together forever. I don't know if the pain of her being gone will go away in this life, but I have peace, comfort and joy in Christ, even in my grief.

I just love, Doreen, how you are so committed to taking everything to scripture and being based in the Bible. You even caught yourself while talking, you were about to say "it opened a door" but then you said, no that's not biblical. Amazing! I have loved listening to you for the past few years and you inspire me to be more planted in the Bible and EXACTLY what it says!!! Keep going friend!

I am so thankful for both of you. Fearlessly standing up for the truth, speaking out in love with grace, with the goal and hope that people would repent and walk in true freedom and comfort we only have in Christ So many people today need this message, not knowing what evil they are partnering with.

This was so good. My husband passed away in November of 2022. A few months after he passed I had a very vivid dream about him. We were taking a walk together and talking... it was comforting to me at the time. I didn't realize that this was actually necromancy. I don't recall inviting it... thankfully it hasn't happened since then. I grew up with family members talking to deceased loved ones at their gravesites, "seeing" them in signs like birds, etc. It was helpful to understand how this is false and not of God. I've been a Christian since I was 8 years old and this was never really covered explicitly in any church I've ever attended. Thank you for speaking clearly and plainly about what God's Word says about this and how we can guard against it.

I so enjoyed this discussion. I lead GriefShare groups and this always comes up. As a widow, I know that sadness of loss, but also the strength and peace that can only come from a God we can fully trust. His faithful Word is our guide and comfort. And also the shameless cruelty of the Enemy--- his lies can be crippling to those in grief. GriefShare turns each lesson toward God's Word.

It's been a bottom line doctrine of the CC for hundreds and hundreds of years. Mary and saints are dead to this world, and yet they are prayed to and believed to have power to answer prayers.

A great topic. Here is how i see the slippery slope:

1. Loved one dies and you are thinking about them

2. You start to wonder if they were proud of you or if they are looking down and seeing you succeed at things or if they forgave you for things you may have done

3. You start to say something like "if you can hear me i hope you are proud" or "if you can hear me I hope you forgive me for..." or "i wish you were here enjoying this with me"

4. You start to hear something back that sounds good and comforting

5. You start to hear other things

6. Since they can hear you you might as well ask for stuff and for them to put in a good word for you

7. You actively are directing conversations to them in a prayer like fashion. this includes asking them for intercession

Where does the slope start?

Is it at step 1? 2? 3? or after?

Is the definition of communication a two way street, does the slope start when you get, or expect, a response (i.e. step 4) or does it include step 1 with one way communication that is not asking for anything?

I would think step 1 is not included since we are to mourn for loved ones which means we are thinking about them. Maybe #2 is ok. I think step 3 is the beginning of the slope but i am open to change my mind.

I love my protestant friends but we have to do better with our caricatures in apologetics. I'm willing to have a live dialogue with you on this topic if you're willing.

God bless ☦️

A friend of mines brother was killed by a drunk driver. The mother in her grief started hearing messages from him behind the dead. She would write them down and give those messages to other people as if it was a prophetic word. I had to stop being around that family because of the negative effect it had me- just being in that house made me feel like I had a weight on my chest. I’ve been told to never judge what someone does in their grief, but this eventually destroyed the family.

It sounds exactly Iike the story of Steve Berger

Oh my goodness! Alisa and Doreen thank you so much for this message! It resonates truth in me. I have been a devoted Jesus follower for 50 + years (can't believe it's been so long) and this message has convicted me. I lost a dear brother 10 years ago and I still miss him deeply BUT several months ago I had a dream that he visited me briefly and I ran up to hug him. He embraced me for a moment and then said "I have to go as I have work to do." He was strong and a little bigger and taller than when he was here on earth. I took it as a comfort and did until now. I never asked for a dream or a vision of him nor did I try to contact him. But because of this video I verbally and loudly confessed my sin, asked for forgiveness and renounced any workings of the enemy in our home. I have read Deuteronomy 18 several times in the past but not in the past two years. I know it's been two years because I used to work with women who are I would say wrapped up in New Thought. I reviewed what the Lord says in Deuteronomy to help give me clarity about what they were saying and doing. Anyway this is a long comment and you may not read it but maybe it will encourage someone. Praise the Lord for He is good! Thank you again to both of you!!
