2 things he said (paraphrasing): You need to give people simple tools to get any job done. Scala has those, but on the first look it appears incredibly complex and confusing.
I suggest that get more people to try it? Make it look a lot less daunting by delineating what an application programmer would need and what should be left on the shelf for library creators and by giving a set of "best practices" which are not a complete paradigm, but a guide.

Personally I love Scala. Unfortunately I've been unable to find a job that allows me to code in Scala for my day to day, so I think it'd be very helpful to encourage companies to provide more entry level jobs as opposed to only hiring mid to senior level devs that'd be quite helpful.
