Those are called 3-stage whistle rockets, I believe. They make a whistle and a large boom, and it sounds like gunshots when it's on it's second stage. So that's the reason why they sound like nuclear bombs.

Fun fact, yesterday at July 3rd, there was a early fireworks show at the park. Once the fireworks had started, one of the fireworks actually sound like screaming people, it was a white fireworks. But still it was terrified me, a lot😰😰
