GoldenEar Triton One Loudspeakers

Some have called my passion for great sound an obsession — others have called it an illness. Whatever you want to call it, it’s absolutely an addiction.

After 25 years of trying to score the same high I got when I heard my first high-end audio system (at a boutique shop called Fred’s Sound of Music in Digital Trends’ hometown of Portland, Oregon), I finally found my fix: the GoldenEar Technology Triton One loudspeaker.

And that’s no hyperbole, people. I’ve heard a lot of great speakers over the years, some of them costing upwards of $30,000, and while many sounded excellent, none managed to evoke the feeling I got as a 14-year-old kid helping my dad buy our first really nice stereo system. Not only did the Triton One deliver that feeling, it exceeded it. Seriously, I might be ruined forever — the Triton One is just that great.

What’s more, this flagship speaker is priced like its competition’s entry-level fare. At just $5,000 a pair, the Triton One lays waste to speakers costing several times more. How? To find out, we talked at length with Sandy Gross, the co-founder of such esteemed speaker brands as Polk and Definitive Technology, and now, GoldenEar Technology. It turns out, there’s so much going on behind the One’s black shroud, we don’t have room for it all right here.

Fortunately, that’s what reviews are for! To get the whole scoop, you’ll need to visit us in a couple of week, but for now, you can whet your appetite with our video, where we get up close and personal with one of the most majestic speakers we’ve heard in some time.

Best purchase I've ever made. People tried to sell these buttkicker things for the seats in my home theater but the bass that comes out of these speakers shakes the house.

I would say the biggest problem with having the subwoofers built into the towers is often (or possibly always) the BEST location for your subwoofer(s) is not the same location as your front L+R loud speakers. But the benefit is that the subwoofer drivers are better time aligned (phase matched) to the other drivers, and the active crossover is optimized for the specific driver and cabinet tuning. Anyone have comments to share on this?

While these speakers do a lot of things well, they ultimately disappoint in the bass for me.
