Materials list:

Welcome back to Model Railroading 101! In this episode, we'll take a look at some easy and inexpensive techniques you can use to apply basic weathering to your rolling stock.

Most models come out of the box looking fresh and clean. When was the last time you saw a real piece of railroad equipment that looked like that without even any rust? Follow along as John weathers and tunes up a very inexpensive N Scale model boxcar using acrylic paint washes, weathering powders, and colored pencils. It doesn't matter if you model in N Scale, HO Scale, O Scale, G Scale, or really any scale; these approaches can be used in all of them.

You don't have to be an expert to get started with weathering. You just have to be willing to experiment, preferably on inexpensive models you picked up a long time ago, or at a train show bargain bin. You could even just practice on scrap plastic, for that matter!

Very good John, using a ink eraser on lettering make the faded, using a down strokes makes the lettering look as it it is washing out too. You give us all great ideas I thought I'd share one too.👍👍👍👍😃

Nice job! Yes it is very rewarding to fix an old model to make it valuable to the eye and with better performance.

Mechanical improvements (I.e. weight, trucks, couplers, etc.) are a very good place to start, as it adds to the enjoyment with very little effort. Weathering a good running model is much satisfying in my opinion...

Always interesting to see how others weather their equipment — a lot of interesting techniques worth trying in this video. I treat the trucks much differently: a quick coat of automotive adhesion promoter (helps paint stick to delrin components) followed by ghost gray primer (Testors U.S, Navy aircraft color) followed by a pastel brown and then a subtle application of powders (a palette of dark brown, black, gray, yellow, white and sometimes orange) to bring out the details and create road grime. By the way, this Great Northern car was originally introduced by Life Like in the early '90s. The same car (and same GN road number) later appeared under the Industrial Rail label, but the original low profile metal wheels (chemically blackened) gave way to the less expensive plastic variety.

Man thank you John. This is one of the best weathering videos I have seen. Being a N Scaler too made me appreciate it more. O a a big thanks for the weight scale. That just makes things easier, Chris

Very informative. For beginners and for the more experienced. I used colored pencils especially to streak painted lettering. Thank you for your efforts.

Nice video tutorial. Nice work. Yes it is fun to use old wagons and make them appropriate to go on our layout. People gave me old train stuff, and I keep the wagon I like and change the couplers, make the weight ok, and that's it, a new wagon! Next I will use your example to weather them and make look more real.

You made a $2 car look like a $20 car. Impressive. I need to weather more stuff.

Great video! I agree with you John, the hardest part of any project is getting started. I have a couple of “test” cars that I try painting or weathering ideas on. I find having those cars allows me to relax and usually I do a better job then I thought I would.

I just got back into N scale this year. Had a small set up when I was younger. But I've build some lazer cut structures and weathered them. To me weathering is addictively fun. Great video. Thanks.

Very good video John. Thanks for a great series, I watched all that applied to me. I use NCE and will use a form out car cards to operate my layout when it reaches that state later this year. Room construction is almost done. Now I gotta go to the freeway and start collecting cans to buy lumber 🙂 and I am looking at the boxes of "factory fresh" rolling stock and locomotives I have. I will pick a few cheap ones and try these techniques out.

Great work John. With your weathering and replacing the stirrups and brake wheel with finer parts, would hide the origin of car.
