Valentine's Day Heart Coasters from Reclaimed Wood, Step 7, Michigan Woodworking Artists
- Step 7:
The resin is set and ready for the planer. We ran them through the planer as long blocks and it worked great (featured in the long video).
Next, we headed to the band saw to slice the blocks into 3rds. Again, we recorded the short blocks and not the long strips.
The strips were then water-popped and sanded before heading to the table saw.
Brett used the table saw to cut the coasters to size.
We'll hand sand, make the bases, ad coat everything next.

- Step 6:
The hearts are sanded and ready for resin.
First, I wanted to cut two of the hearts in half. We'll leave the other 3 whole and just drop them into place.
We considered strips of wood to frame the hearts but opted for a pop of color instead.
We'll let the resin set up overnight and head to the planer next.

- Step 5:
Releasing & sanding the glue-ups.
We were able to make 5 hearts and frames.
4 of the hearts will be cut down into coasters, while 1 will be cut in 2 for the bases/holders.
Next, we'll cut the hearts & resin them into place.

- Step 4:
Remove the tape & prepare for 2nd glue-up.
After this glue-up is set, we'll sand, cut, and resin.

- Step3:
Measure for the coasters.
Fit our 1/2 heart stencil to the centers & trace.
Cut them out on the band saw.
Next, we'll get them prepped for their 2nd glue-up.

- Step 2:
Release the glue-ups.
Running the strips through the planer to level the surfaces and remove the extra glue.
Table saw to square up the ends.
Taping the surfaces & gluing them together to get a symmetrical cut on both sides.
We'll trace and cut the shapes next.

- Step 1:
The first glue-up. We're dividing these coasters into 3 strip sections.

In the fall of 2022, we made a kiln and filled it with freshly milled slabs. Two lots were cleared north of us and we couldn't watch them put these huge trees into the dumpsters. The wood has been drying in the kiln for about 8 weeks. Let's see how many projects we can complete from this first run!

So far we've made 2 butcher blocks:

6 Handled Serving Trays:

1 Moon Slice Serving Tray/Cutting Board:

4 Sets of 6 coasters & Bases

As always Thank you so much for watching our progress!
