Layers of decomposition in a compost pile

As I was digging into my pile of arborist woodchips to lay down a nice thick layer in my garden paths, I realized that the different layers of decomposition were clearly visible, showing how decomposition happens at different rates in different parts of the pile. This is a great chance to show you why it's important to turn our compost, and why we sometimes need to water our compost.
