At least nine people were killed on Monday when a bomb aboard a bus carrying United Nations personnel exploded, Reuters reports.
The bus was traveling in Garowe, the capital of Puntland in northeastern Somalia.
Photos posted on Twitter showed bodies covered in blood inside the bus. The roof of the vehicle was ripped off by the explosion.
Al Shabaab has claimed responsibility for the attack, according to Al Jazeera.
“We carried out the attack in Garowe. We targeted our enemy the UN. We killed an [sic] injured many in the attack,” Al Shabaab military operations spokesman Abulaziz Abu Mus’ab was quoted by Al Jazeera as saying.
Bomb attacks in the north of the country are less common than in the south, where Al Shabaab is waging a war against the Somali government and African Union forces.
U.N. officials, however, have often been targeted by Al Shabaab, which has staged several attacks in the last few years, especially in Mogadishu, the capital.
