HOUSTON, TEXAS — The husband of a Houston businesswoman held in China on spying charges has made a desperate plea for her release as China's president Xi Jinping begins his visit to the US.
Sandy Phan-Gillis, 55, a Vietnam born naturalized US citizen of Chinese descent, was part of a March trade delegation from Houston that visited several cities in China, including Qingdao, Beijing and Shenzhen.
Then, on March 19 as they were passing through immigration from Zhuhai to Macau, the group got separated.
After passing through immigration, the rest of the delegation waited for Phan-Gillis, but unknown to the other members she had been detained.
They eventually returned to the hotel, where Phan-Gillis called one of the group to say she was 'taking care of a personal matter.'
On March 21, when the group was supposed to return to the US, she texted to say she would see them back in Houston.
But she never returned, and it was only when her husband contacted the US consulate in China several days later that he was told she had been detained as an alleged spy and for stealing state secrets.
