In developing countries, mothers and children are dying from preventable illnesses

Canada wants the health of mothers and children to remain a global priority

In 2014, Canada again made this its top international development priority

Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced $3.5 billion will go to improve the health of women , newborns and
children between 2015 and 2020, saving lives globally

From this, $200 million is committed to the Global Financing Facility, where Canada is a founding partner

The Global Financing Facility gathers funds from many private and public sources

It also helps international development partners to better measure and assess the impact of their investments

With Canada's leadership and support, the Facility is funding women's and children's health programs and services over the long term

Being able to better track civil registration and vital statistics is another way to improve health

$100 million of Canada's support will let the Global Financing Facility set up ways to track civil registration and vital statistics in countries where no such systems exist

Through efforts like these, Canada and key partners are taking huge strides to end preventable maternal and child deaths within a generation
