January 13 1993
Two Georgetown big men legends go head to head in Denver, with a combined 11 blocks at the finish.
Patrick Ewing visits 26 year old, second year pro Dikembe Mutombo and the Denver Nuggets. After a physical low post battle, Ewing and Mutombo would finish with the stat sheet stuffed. Mutombo's Nuggets would finish on top, as he finished with 16 points, 16 rebounds, 2 assists, and 6 blocks, against his mentor Patrick Ewing, who took him to school a couple times to end with 22 points, 17 rebounds, and 5 blocks.
Patrick Ewing laid the ground works for a 7 foot giant with the first name Dikembe to dominate the Georgetown paint. Mutombo and teammate and fellow Hall of Fame big man out of Georgetown Alonzo Mourning were forces to be reckoned with in their times in the blue uniform for legendary coach John Thompson.
Dikembe credits his initial NBA success to working out with Patrick, helping him to "expand his game and learn what it means to be a true professional." "Patrick would take [Dikembe and Alonzo Mourning] outside, and we would train for 5-7 hours a day, 3 hours in the morning, 4 hours in the afternoon." 8 all stars later for Mutombo, he joined Patrick in the Hall of Fame in 2015 after an extended career.
The relationship today between Dikembe and Patrick is more of a professional relationship, one where Patrick respects Dikembe's thoughts on the game as much as to discuss Georgetown basketball with Dikembe "almost every day." Ewing is currently the head coach of the program, a program he led as a powerful force out of the Big East in the 80s.
