Die knapp 6000 Einwohner von Appenzell (780 m ü. M.) leben gut von Feriengästen und Tagesbesuchern, die sich im autofreien Ortskern mit den weit über die Schweiz hinaus bekannten Souvenirs eindecken und die ländliche Atmosphäre auf sich wirken lassen. Der Ort, eine Art Freilichtmuseum barocker bäuerlicher Lebensart, hat architektonisch einiges zu bieten. Prachtvoll bemalte Gasthäuser, ausgeschmückte Kirchen, geschwungene Giebel -- selbst der Bahnhof ist schön.

Trotz der relativen Abgeschiedenheit ist Appenzell von Gossau SG, Altstätten und St. Gallen bequem erreichbar als Ausgangspunkt für Wanderungen ins malerische Alpsteingebiet.

Appenzell (780 m above sea level) is the capital of the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden and is situated at the foot of the Alpstein massif. The districts (municipalities) of Appenzell, Schwende and Rüte share the village, whereas the largest part of the village belongs to the district of Appenzell. The image of the village is characterized by buildings from the time after the fire in 1560. Painted wooden buildings with curved or broken gables give the village a special charm. Appenzell is a well-known tourist location. It can be reached easily from Gossau SG, Altstätten and St. Gallen and is a good starting point for hiking tours to the Alpstein region.
The popular and typical souvenirs of Appenzell (cattle drive scenes) can be bought in the historic village center.
