Here's something breed specific in Aussies. Females are the alpha dogs, not the male. They tend to be a bit bossy and sassy. I know my 7 year old is. The breeder did give me this bit of information when I picked her from the litter. She's very smart and follows me everywhere. I live with my daughter who is getting an Aussie puppy from the same breeder. She picked a male because opposite sexes tend to get along better than same sex. Btw, Aussies are the best dogs and Aspen is beautiful :)!

I'm a male and own(hate that word) female. Best match possible. Girls rock in the dog world.

I have a lot of experience of male aussie and female. I can say it is a huge different between a male dog and a female dog.
In aussie male aussies first years can be really hard to deal with they can test your nerve a lot. A femal aussie is easier to handle in general.
They mature much earlier than a male, they are smaller. Easier to train.

Their is a reason why most of the aussies that the owner gives up is male when they are around 1-2 years old in my country.
But I like the males better than females. Males are bigger, stronger more independent and have a lot self-confidence
and they are so beautiful. And they never grow up, they are all infected with Peter Pan syndrome.

I've heard with males in general or all breeds, males tend to be more affectionate.

hi, I own a miniature australian shepherd and they are a lot of work. great dogs though. she's a female and not fixed but I haven't had too much trouble with her estrus cycle. If you have the time and money to take care of an Australian Shepherd it is definitely worth it.

Does sterilizing affect a female dog's behavior? Or does it affect anything?

I used to always think that male dogs are better, but now I prefer females. They tend to be quieter, they don't mark everything and they don't hump and stuff

I think females are better but there both equally good especially if their fixed

I have a MALE Aussie. He will be 4 this October. I plan to get a female soon because he tends to try to be the boss with other male dogs, but all the female dogs he comes across he totally submits too.

oh lord dogs gender does differ its personality: all the pups i played with at a pet shop or a local shelter most always girls are more independent and are very hyper and will play with you for a bit then go do whatever. boys are just lovers and will be happy with whatever you do... its my opinion and what i seen with different breeds or crosses :D

I have had both it's true a male dog will mark his scent and a female will come along and do the same. But not on the corner of a pole on your patio LOL. But I love them both but I must say my female seem to learn quicker

Having an uncastrated male is not necessarily any easier. I have an acquaintance who has a shiba inu that is so sexually frustrated he tries to hump anyone and everything when females start to go into heat. He also tries to run away to neighbouring females at every chance he gets and is totally hyper and can't walk in a leash properly, even though he usually is very nice on the leash.

I also knew a norwegian elkhound that I never noticed any behaviour change in during her heat( I used to walk her daily), other than that she cleaned herself down there so often that the owner never knew when to have her mated.

So you really can't know for sure if male or female would be better unspayed, when there can be such huge individual differences. But I think you shouldn't get an animal if you can't consider spaying them if they turn out to have lots of problems and frustrations from being reproductive.

Wait... When you talk about scent marking... Do you mean that they do that at home? (I never had a dog so bear with me)
Because I was taking care of a male dog for half a day
And he was scent marking alot, but outside. Aka every other rock, lamp, tree etc.
Soooo... To they mark inside at home, or only outside?
