1953 Bentley R-Type Continental Fastback

The elegant R-Type Continental Fastback by H.J. Mulliner is an undisputed icon of British motoring and one of the all-time great Bentley models. Built in extremely limited numbers, these high-performance grand touring cars attracted an elite clientele. This garage-find R-Type is certainly no exception, as Ian Fleming, creator of the James Bond series, ordered this Bentley for his friend and collaborator Ivar Bryce. Recently discovered in a Hollywood, California garage, where it had been hidden away for over three decades, this unrestored R-Type Continental is the most exciting and important post-war Bentley.

How on earth could this have been hidden away? Give it to a specialist to restore, paint it a non-white colour and get driving the thing. It really is a very usable item. I know because my father had a 'R' type, not continental, Bentley. They were and still are, really excellent, durable, practical everyday machines.

This car was originally grey with black trim and apparently the radiator was painted the same color as the body. It was purchased by Ivar Bryce through the good offices of his closest friend, Ian Fleming. The video does not do the car and its amazing history justice.

It makes sense it wasn't Fleming's own car, since it's a left-hand drive car. I predict at LEAST $1.3M!
