There Is A Giant Mystery Pterosaur in Utah | Paleo Mysteries

Показать описание
There are plenty of fragmentary specimens out there. Some are waiting to be found, others have been found long ago. Most will never be able to provide more than a footnote at worst, or a data point at best. It is due to the very nature of the biologic, paleontologic, and geologic records. One such find, singular in nature, provides but a peak into a world of giant pterosaurs that we may never get a full glimpse of.

I am a Utah native, and I feel I’m very up to date with our many new archosaur discoveries every single year. I had no idea a giant azdarchid had been found in the famous Kaiparowits formation. This has me so damn excited!! Pterosaurs are relatively rare in the Southwest, especially ones from this group. The only Utah pterosaur I was aware of was Caelestiventus, and some isolated fragments of a pteranodontid in the Mancos Shale. Thank you so much for sharing!!

OH MY GOSH!
I have been working on a Kaiparowits formation mural over the past month and during working on it I said to myself “this mural could use some pterosaurs” so I ended up putting some azhdarchid pterosaurus as they are super cool and I knew azhdarchids lived during the Cretaceous although that was just a guess on my part that there were azhdarchids living specifically in the Kaiparowits formation and I also gave the azhdarchid pterosaur in my mural the size of being slightly taller than a 6ft tall human as I knew it was rare for pterosaurs to get to Quetzalocoatlus size so I just went for the conservative estimate of around a human size and what do you know the pterosaur talked about in this video is roughly around that size! And then my own personal final ok to put azhdarchids in the Kaiparowits formation is looking at formations from roughly around the same time such as the Dinosaur Park formation and Kryodrakon is found there so that’s when I decided on fully putting a azhdarchid in my mural!

I’M SO HAPPY I MANGED TO PREDICT THIS!

This may not seem like that big of an accomplishment to your average paleontologist that probably could have came to the conclusion that azhdarchids lived in the Kaiparowits formation in 2 seconds but as just an average person who has been slowly learning about dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures throughout their life, I am so proud of myself that I have gotten to the point we’re I can predict a creature could once have lived in an area without knowing that fossils of that type of creature have been found in that area 😁!

Ps: sorry for any bad typing, I typed this super quick!

WOAH! I've never seen an EDGE video in the same day it came out! Or at least within 24 hours of its release. This pterosaur is really cool! Glad I watched this video!

To be honest I really love these mystery specimens, which may or may not represent new species! Like for some reason I love seeing in a phylogenetic tree not just a row of defined genera/species, but also a bunch of taxa known only as a specimen number like "NHMUK 2057" or an informal nickname like the "Fort Laramie dromaeosaur" (both made up)... I don't know, I find the mystery surrounding these enigmatic, undescribed specimens just makes me think that there's so much more out there to try and find out!

Never heard of this Azhdarchid before. Hopefully more information can be gleaned from this species in the future. Awesome video 😎

Idk if I'll look back on my current love of pterosaurs in a few years as the equivalent of the pumpkin spice latte (i.e., "basic" taste), but I'm enjoying it now and just can't get enough of these big-beaked birdlikes. Thanks for another great video!

If it is confirmed I hope it gets to be called after the Utes, or the Puebloans.

Which states on mainland America are typically known as "Howdy Partner" culture?

As a Hawaii citizen I have a guess but something tells me Utah is one of them.

I am only watching this for the first time and I am only at the beginning.
But I like how you start with the joke about Spinosaurus not being enigmatic any more. Sure, pal. 😂
