Thank you to the Grenada Bar Association for this timely lecture. Small Island Developing States (SIDS) are at the forefront of the climate crisis, enduring catastrophic hurricanes, rising seas, and the crushing socio-economic toll of rebuilding after disasters. These nations, contributing the least to global emissions, bear the heaviest burden, highlighting a profound crisis of justice. As was recently noted in a documentary presented by Sir Archibald Nedd’s great-granddaughter, Annissa LaTouche (Co-produced by Sir Archibald’s granddaughter, Deirdre LaBassiere with Prof. Robert Beckford) the Commonwealth, with its unique representation of SIDS, must champion their survival as a moral, economic, and environmental imperative. As was made clear in the lecture we must demand urgent, equitable action - because the cost of inaction is not just environmental; it’s human, cultural, and generational.
