Nicholas Milyari Fitzpatrick is a young Yanyuwa man from Borroloola, a remote community in the Northern Territory. He grew on country and learnt Aboriginal lore from his elders, who also taught him to be a saltwater hunter and to protect his traditional country - the sea and islands in the Gulf of Carpinteria. He worked for many years as a Li-Anthawirriyarra Sea Ranger.
Nick is a leader in his community and is very active on speaking for his country and ensuring that remote Aboriginal communities can have the option of clean sustainable jobs on country like tourism, renewable energy and ranger programs. He is passionate about climate justice and is one of the the current Northern Territory Coordinators for the Seed, Australia’s first Indigenous Youth Climate Network.
In 2017 Nick was part of a group of 24 Indigenous leaders who came together in Melbourne and formed the First Nations Renewable Energy Alliance, he is now the youngest member of the alliance’s seven-member steering committee. They aim to tackle high power costs and entrenched disadvantage by pushing for renewable energy in Indigenous communities, and will lobby government and partner with private enterprise and other community energy alliances to support Indigenous communities looking to transition to renewable energy. They aim to led the transition to clean renewable energy to secure a safe climate future led for all Australians.
