Gerstner USA Tool Chest Tour

While on a recent trip to Ohio and browsing a couple antique malls, I came across this beautiful Gerstner & Sons Model 062 tool chest with matching riser. Some remnants from the previous owner and machinist, Mr. Robert Gillespie was still in this tool box including a few tools and charts. He took very good care is this tool chest and I just had to have it. This will now be my machinist toolbox for the new shop and I plan to keep all of Mr. Gillespie's tools in there to preserve the history of his career. I do plan to later purchase a matching roller chest from Gerstner to make a matching 3 piece set. In this video we explore what all is left in this chest and talk briefly on the Gerstner line of tool chests.
Visit the Gerstner website to learn more about their made in USA products that are still proudly made in Dayton, Ohio.

I found Mr. Gillespie’s obituary online. He passed away in 2009 at age 78. He was married to his wife Rosalie for 61 years! The obituary doesn’t mention his profession, but I also found a note of condolence he wrote in 2005 following the passing of a fellow Laserplane employee. He mentioned his wife Rosalie in the note. He lived in New Carlise, Ohio.

Thank you Adam for caring enough to preserve the history of this box while giving it the well deserved future it deserves. It couldn't have ended up in better hands. One of the things we appreciate about you is that you're never too proud to share your mistakes with us. I really enjoyed this video! God bless our veterans 🇺🇸

One of the things I do admire about Mr. Booth is how he shows respect to others that are here and gone. I'm sure Mr. Gillespie would be honored you have his box.

What an excellent find and very fair price for the condition and history of this box. I purchased a beauty gerstner in 2014 with two signatures in it also the original in 1942 then again in 1965 and now mine in 2014. Mr Gillespie knew if he had no one to pass it down to it would be sold most probably in an estate sale and hoped someone like Adam would purchase and appreciate it. My compliment to the person that sold it for leaving it in the exact condition it was found in passing it on knowing it's historical value to someone.

Most likely the top chest was refelted in 2006. That would perfectly explain the key chain you found inside. The riser box felt is in good but faded condition which would explain why it wasn't replaced. Gerstner is definitely the gold standard for machinest toolboxes and hopefully will remain so for another hundred years at least. There are not many companies still make the same products to the same incredibly high standards as they did 100 years ago and especially not still made in america.

We have seen you go through multiple vintage chests and even stuff that has come in the Mailbag. I am always touched by your honest reverence for the past owners of this stuff. Your passion for that personal history comes through very clearly every time. This also happens when you mention the tools and materials you use that originated in your Dad's shop and Grand-dad's shop. You are a very sensitive historian Adom79... (Sorry, couldn't resist) I love all your videos Sir.

Adam, you mentioned the library card from Orange Coast College from 1965. That is a two year college in Southern California, Costa Mesa to be exact. I went there from 1969 to 1971. I'm 72 years old so that would probably make Mr. Gillespie in his middle to late seventies. That is if he's still around. Love that cabinet.

Great video Adam . Love how sentimental you are . Keeping history is a great attribute. Please don't be hard on yourself. We all make mistakes and mate lets face it you rarely do Cheers from Australia 🇦🇺

Don be ashamed, everyone makes mistakes. Admitting to them shows the character of a true man. Your videos are awesome.

Hey mate, the value of antiques only goes up when there are human mistakes involved in the dating and identification process. Don't sweat the mistakes in the signatures, they'll only make these things more valuable in the long run!

Awesome video! I'm always happy to watch someone who knows the subject matter, and loves the history do a tour of something they bought, and will definitely use for the rest of their life.

Love from Australia my man. Keep on doing what you do.

Fun video. I've seen small T-handled augers like the ones you pulled out at 10:45 in drawers at the house of my wife's grandmother in Austria. They're used to drill wood: pilot holes for small screws and the like.
