The thief was born with nothing, and remembered nothing. Yet, he lived his life, with happiness and joy. His journey hath showed him the truth, and who he really was. Now with the death of the world before him, he must stand and lead, against his fate, and not alone.

The princess was beloved by all, yet knew that her mother was not right. She ran away to pursue the truth. She learned her origins, and the plot conspiring behind her. With love and bravery, she stands tall, not alone.

The automaton grew up alone, and was alone, until he met his one true friend. Dragged along an adventure, he fights to find himself. Since then, he comes to a realization, of life’s meaning and worth, and how he won’t live to see it all. He gains his resolve, and continues to fight for a better future, not alone.

The knight was always stubborn, to a clear fault. He was adamant in his judgment, his loyalty never wavering. Protecting his princess, he sees the shades of grey between black and white. Now he is ready to fight, for his friends and princess, not alone.

The cook was always energetic, but sheltered from the world. In hopes the see the outside world, s/he is sent on a quest of little complaint, for food and learning. Despite having little stakes in the matter, s/he knows of the consequences, and is loyal to their friends. S/he fights for the world they learned to cherish, not alone.

The lancer was a brave warrior, who loved her country as much as her fiancé. His lost led to her wandering, stuck searching for memories long gone. Her people in ruin, her lover forgotten, she fights despite her troubles. She wills herself to march on, wanting to be remembered as someone powerful and heroic, not alone.

The girl was raised by her grandfather, but soon was left alone to fend for herself. A chance meeting would put everything she knew and promised on the line for a chance at love and companionship. Learning of the bigger picture, her spunk is matched by her drive to see things to the end. Her friends in shambles, she keeps them together, unwavering, not alone.

The mercenary had a better life, one messed up by a massive grudge. His life choices would lead him to the very person that messed him up. Despite his determination to do things himself, one chance save changes his world view. Despite his aloof stature, he knows he can count on allies to help him, not alone.

Thus they face death head on, knowing they’re not alone.

This song, of all Final Fantasy songs, is important to me. I have great memories of playing through this game with a friend I loved like a brother.

He lost his last battle with mental health nearly 20 years ago now, and this song will always remind me of him.

FF IX is such a great game. The message about searching for your identity is a great one. Zidane finally learned where he had come from, and wondered if his genetics were his destiny. He learned that his loyalty to his friends was greater than what Garland had made him for, and that his genetics were not his destiny. So many characters had to decide between nature and nurture in that game. As someone who was adopted and found his birth parents, I can relate.
This might be my favorite track of all time from FF. So amazing, even better than To Zanarkan.
