How To Fix A Sagging Door

Got a door that’s sagging?
This one is rubbing at the top.
Let me show you the best way to fix it.
First, pick out a 2 ½” long screw that is the same color and diameter as your hinge screws.
You’re going to need a bit for the screw- this one is Phillips.
I’m using an extension to clear the door, and you’ll need a drill or an impact driver.
We just moved into this apartment while we are building our new house, and this is a repair that needed to be done.
These hinge screws were loose and completely stripped out, and they were only long enough to go into the door jamb.
I replaced this middle hinge screw because it’s closer to the center of the jamb and more likely to reach the framing.
The 2 ½” screw will go all the way through the door jamb and into the 2x4 stud behind it.
Once the head of the screw reached the hinge, I kept on going so that it would pull the hinge and the jamb back to where it needed to be.
I also replaced the screw above- The door is no longer sagging, and it doesn’t rub.
The margin above the door is still big, but it opens and closes like it should. @hausplans

Double check it’s flush amongst the entire length of the edge, great video! Just gotta remind the newbies . I was taught this by a old man, and now do it even when I instal new doors to ensure no future sagging .

I remember doing this in 2013 for the restroom door at our house with 4 room mates. Except I was a broke sign installer and used a left over 6 inch torque deck screw 😂😂

Other videos will have you try and bend the hinge holding the door... I tried that, this was the only fix that worked for me... and the simplest too.

As a retired locksmith I've done this hundreds of times. I use 3" screw though. It was always amazing to me that so called professional carpenters don't care one iota to do this correctly.

If the hole is stripped for the longer screw as well, then you can fill the hollow with toothpicks and a little glue. Then wait 30 minutes for it to dry then drill your screw back in. It has always worked for me.

As a contractor's helper, we called this the $80 screw- as that's what it cost to have us come out and implement it.

If I'm renting an apartment I'm calling the maintenance and having them do this for me. That being said, now I know how to do it myself!

You can also stick a couple toothpicks or wood match in the hole to create a new thread point

You should change all the screws for longer ones. Longer is stronger and better for security. They make kicking a door in quite a bit harder to do.

Actually a good tip. Most of the time the screws only go into trim. It's awful

I would of just taken out the screws.

Inserted some match sticks into the holes.
Snap flush with the hinge.

This replaces the wood, that the screw removed.
Making a tight fitting screw fix.

Simple drill screws back in, job done 😊

Doesnt work as well with solid core doors but none the less you should put longer screws in the top 2 hinges for this reason

The problem is the door stop that was installed. It pulls the jamb every time you let it swing open. The screw will help but it will sag again.

Don't forget to put the old screws back before you leave or they might charge you for the repairs 😂

Wax the screw and even pre drill so it doesn't break off in there
