How to 03: Trimming Your Fenders

In this How To episode of SnailTrail4x4, Jimmy Jet shows you how to get more suspension travel by trimming your fenders. Do you tires hit your Fenders? Are your fenders stopping your flex or turning. Lets Cut them away.

First we need to create a home made template. We ended up using a sheet of newspaper to create ours. Cardboard is another good material to use for making templates. The reason we are making a template is than we are able to flip the template over and apply the same design, cut out, to the other side.

Once the template is made, and you have your line that your going to trim away, you need to remove the fender. There are nine 10 mm bolts and two screws holding the fender to the frame. Once these are removed you can pull your fender off and take it to get cut.

Thank you Alec Steele for helping me keep safe by wearing a respirator mask while grinding or cutting.

I use vinyl transfer film. For transferring diecut vinyl graphics. You can get stuff with a 1”x1” grid on it too which helps with layout. Plus it’s clear, so if you draw on your fender you can see the line through the film. Stick it to the back release paper to transfer a mirror image. I’ve used this technique to make templates for dirt bike graphics to get the shape. Then I stick them to butcher paper and take them to kinkos and scan them onto a usb. Now I have digital copies to make custom graphics cut to fit perfect.

Damn that was a good edit! I've always used a sawzall. Someone i know who owns a pretty good ($$) fab shop said he just gets it "close enough" because theyll never know haha, he said he loves doing fenders because you cant see both sides at the same time so you have room for error.

I cut fenders all the time while they are still on the truck and then roll back in a factory Edge if you want to butcher something then do it like that

At 4:04, the paper is far from level with the body line, you need a tape measure to square things up, and a level!

Just use a tape measure, waaaay easier and faster. I was going to see if you were going to cut and roll them. Anyway, whatever works! 👍
