TerranScapes - Ocean Board Set WIP #2 - Waves...

In this work in progress update, I explain the research I did on types of ocean waves and what types of ocean bottoms form them. I give a (very) brief description of the differences between plunging, spilling and surging waves.

I then carry this knowledge onto the ocean boards themselves, describing how I modified the board profiles based on this new understanding, and how I plan to model the waves. I also show a proposed layout for the large island boards, as well as share how the layers of the boards will progress from the deeper water to the dry beach sand.

Love your commitment to research and understanding ... all in building tabletop scenery, that's a true master right there.  Always admire your work, thanks for sharing some of your insights and taking us into the classroom with you.  Cheers

Always a pleasure listening to these vids and seeing how artists get their understanding and inspiration from ... brilliant! ... Walts

First video I've watched on your channel. I'm gobsmacked. I have been researching resin poured scenery for gaming, and there are several beautiful tables out there, but I have yet to see someone explain the ocean physics of it. It is all done on aesthetics, and some people seem to have an eye for that, even though their wave physics may be wrong, it doesn't distract, in a significant way, from the overall terrain... usually. I am looking for ideas for a flat resin table with some underwater terrain (shallows, reefs, etc), and I don't want to cover up the detail with ocean froth. I found your channel in my quest to find what I'm looking for. lol. Your channel takes terrain to a new level! So now I'm distracted by finding out how this project turns out!

So, now I will binge watch the rest of this series... with no spoilers. LOL. Subscribed!

Wow you really did your home work on this. I am sure it will pay off when all is done.

Fantastic video man, really quite the effort to pull together 40+ minutes of stuff. Thank you so much!

the banding effect you talk about @ ~14:16 is the swash zones of the tide lines I believe, having grown up at the beach, we always watched out for where we put our stuff when surfing by the high tide mark, the highest band as it were, didnt want our stuff to get swept out at tide change lol.

I signed up on Patreon yesterday, and now feel utterly justified in doing so after watching this video! Fantastic:)

You are indeed very committed to your work. I like your piece on how the waves break. More important,  I love that you have taken the time to share that knowledge with us.

Here is a little mental experiment you might consider: I work on a scale of 1:60 when making buildings and terrain. I assume that you work on a similar scale. Look at the pictures of beaches. If you were to make an exact scale model of those beaches, how wide would they be? What is the wave length of the waves you want to model? How many waves can you then fit on your terrain board?

When making miniature buildings and other board pieces or just painting miniatures, I have discovered that sometimes the right/realistic way either looks boring or just plain wrong. For instance, I once made a jetty. The supporting wooden structure had the right size according to scale, but they looked too thin and fragile. I then made another jetty. This time I tripled the thickness of the wooden beams. This one looked way cooler. When making half-timbered buildings, I also exaggerate the size of the wooden pieces.

My point is: don't let realism get in the way of making cool terrain.

Regarding the video in the PowerPoint, playing back video on a computer takes up a lot of CPU resources. Recording video uses a lot more CPU resources. Doing the two things at the same time, and you are asking for trouble.

I can't wait to see the finished board.

Cracking vid, feel free to do as many as these as you can! It's no wonder you're the master matey. Out of interest, what do you use to carve your styrofoam boards?

In your words, "Obsessed" with ocean boards :P

Most of those videos are from Oregon and Washington.  I think I've climbed on most of the rocks you see there.

To make/model plunging waves could you possibly use a piece of small plastic tubing to model the material around and then slide the plastic tubing out once the material had set/hardened to give you the wave "curl" ?

dude when are going to do a review of the die cutter and let us know what brand it is and how thick/what type of material it can cut? Been waiting ages for that one ;)  I want to upgrade from my little silhouette one (really just a card stock and vinyl cutter), i want to be able to cut polystyrene for structure and details! love the wave in depth info here too!

Everyone needs to believe in something....  I believe I will have another beer ;)

I have seen many issues with running Videos from within Powerpoint.  I would suggest a link to the video and have it in a folder or on your desktop and run them outside of power point.

When you carved out the area where the water will be, what tool did you use? Mine always comes out very rigid and chopped up, yours looks very smooth. The scalloped parts don't look like they have any edges which is what I try for all the time!

I am sure this question is answered somewhere in other demos but what tools do you use to cut down your foam board and where can I find them?  Thanks so much for your help.

Also you could make some waves mobiles.
