love that you're doing shorts for maya! Blender has an abundance of tutorials like this but it's hard to find for maya so thanks for that

i would recommend orienting the target locator to the camera (via match transforms -> match rotation), then parenting. Then you can slide the locator directly away from the camera with one easy handle, making it easy to get those sliding focus shots
