Vai is the only and unique tropical natural palm forest of Europe. It is actualky Europe’s only native palm forest. On the island of Crete some smaller natural palm places exist, most notably in Preveli and nearby at Itanos. Vai has also an attractive palm beach. Vai is a palm forest made up of the endemic Cretan date palm (Phoenix theophrasti). In the 1980's Vai was declared a natural protected area and no buildings or hotels are permitted. There are however a restaurant and some smaller shops in Vai. Vai is located in the far east of the island of Crete close to Paleokastro, Sitia, Toplou Monastery and the Dionysades islands.
