Strap in friend, we're going to spend an hour and 20 minutes hanging out together while I explain what's new, what's working (and what's NOT working) in my ever-evolving live system. SKIPPABLE CHAPTER LINKS & OTHER VIDS BELOW, YO!

▶ SKIPPABLE CHAPTERS
0:00 Intro
1:12 How many parts do I have? Walkthru inc M303 (New!), plus Prok Drums, Squid Salmple.
5:17 Effects in the System, Pre Fader use of Clouds
6:42 How many things do you need to play a set?
7:25 Ergonomic changes in the case, layout thoughts
8:20 Bassline Generation system, thoughts about moving Turing Machine
9:42 Controlling/Managing Percussion Quickly, Using Submixes
11:57 Squid Salmple Demo and Initial Thoughts, and wish for more Grids, ways to use multiple Grids, and Percussion Routing thoughts.
14:52 Squid Demo, testing what remapping I/O would do on a sample set.
16:18 Using other 3 outputs of VPME Euclidean Circles
16:55 How I'm making kick patterns now using Sequential Switch and two Euclidean patterns.
IMPORTANT FACT!! Euclidean Circles actually lets you do this 32-step trick in-module (But it combines Ring 1 & 2 to make a double length pattern) BUT my way, I get the most amount of immediately tweakable patterns for just 2HP extra burn without menu diving (eg not burning my snare ring to do it).
20:54 Using Disting to make sustained held notes that don't droop.
24:37 Problem with my kick method for straight 4/4's (the in-module method would be easier for that)
25:45 Using sequential switch to create incidental percussion and disappointment with using a master clock divider to reclock sequencers (Grids and Metropolis)
28:26 Getting Long passages on Metropolis without reclocking module slower. And then using 3 note sequences for acid.
31:45 A patching thought for getting longer call-and-response sequences.
33:38 Texturising Vocals with Clouds and using Radio Music loops for textures - and Sweep da dog. RIP.
36:28 Ochd for modulation of Clouds, Radio Music for vinyl crackle.
39:04 Cable Management - Reusable Twisties I found on Amazon.
40:36 Why Lyra 8 makes a good modular-accompaniment/unique benefits.
43:35 Lyra's Gnarliness
45:40 Where I explain what's the greatest accessory you can buy for your studio. No really.
46:20 MIDIGAL as alternative modular accompaniment tool for foolproof polysynth use alongside modular.
47:02 My motto/thing I've been trying to bear in mind while practicing.
50:17 Q&A: Why so many mixers? What are your unity mixers doing?
52:03 What are the Divkid mutes doing? (controlling Squid outs, and sending modulation - section includes a demo of some Squid Salmple banks)
55:46 Using Divkid mutes to send Turing machine modulation to Plaits.
58:21 How do I experiment with other tempos? Following with a demo at 95 BPM and talk about modulation to keep stuff alive at slow tempos.
1:04:17 Ochd Modulating Plaits FM and Morph inputs
1:09:10 Ending thoughts about my congealing system.
1:09:46 How I tune my oscillators/system! Demo of my method and some other by-ear tunings.
1:19:23 Wrap up.

Most studio posts:

Not a single cable to be seen

Modular people:

Look at all these cables. There's so many! Aren't they pretty?

often use clouds in the same why myself, feed it a steady clock and any sound source and it makes instant percussion plus you can crank the density by hand for when you want neat industrial hardware noises, as for distributing triggers a switch matrix would be my goto. one of my favorite things is to run some clocks / euclidean patterns / funky tap tempoed lfos into the wmd ssm, then you can mix and match the triggers and even use the comparator outputs in tandem with a slow clock on the compare in input to get that periodic percussion effect you were talking about, food for thinks

Thanks for more great material! Not sure if someone else has suggested this, but one of the things I do for 'incidental' stuff is use MI Branches. Sometimes I use it like you do a sequential switch, where I send the outputs from Branches to two devices. or, another thing I have done, is send the 2nd output to a burst module.. also on occasion I will double up the coin toss, as in the previous burst example, I will run the 2nd output from Branches into the input of the 2nd unit in Branches, so when the burst trigger is sent, there is another layer of chance that it will go through.. lastly, sometimes I just use one output from Branches, to skip some triggers. and, as always, playing with the probability knob allows nice dynamics during the performance.I have a Skipmin on backorder, but I am interested to get that in the flow as well.

Thank you for the nice video and highly digestable musical output!!! The world needs more people like you who know how to PLAY a modular system!!! Why do I know that? I was a shadow citizen in SCHNEIDER'S WORLD... and even in eight years... I heard so many expert talk and what rocks and what not... but never any creative-relevant audio output. THUMBS UP³ mylarmelodies.

That drum sequencing! Seems like you cracked the code, sounds a lot like what Floating Points did on Crush, what a groove!

There's a 2hp TM, which you might actually prefer for the live case....
I really like these videos and the evolution of your live set and the case. Bless.

Your 4/4 kick idea is something I’ve been working on!

I was thinking you mult Euclidean, then having a switch so you can send Euclidean + the other sequencer, OR just Euclidean. Would make it a lot easier to access a 4/4 whenever you need it

You actually gave me an idea to combine Grids with Numeric Repetitor from Noise Engineering. It shifts patterns very well, especially for techno. Great tip!

I feel like plaits is trying to play the role of the classic IDM poly synth playing those off kilter progressions. Could you pre record some Juno progressions into the slample instead? It might give some grounding to those great rhythms.

My dusting brush (via your link) just arrived! My modular and synths are so clean now. Thank you!

An obvious change would be to remove the Metropolis (I know you love it), and change it with a Five12 Vector. You'll keep the repeats/stages but gain tons of variations and sub sequences with almost the same HP real estate. With the expander you'd get 8 tracks instead of two (but even two is one more than the Metro can deliver). I would say you'd want an Ochd, but it's there :).
Finally I believe your life (live) be a lot easier with a Polyend Preset. I guess these aren't really 'problems', it's evolution and you're still at the absolute top of the food chain.

For what it's worth, Make Noise's Function can also do pitch accurate sample and hold. Overlooked feature in Maths baby cousin.

This has to be one of the best modular vids I've ever watched. So much great info - thank you for sharing!!!

Ahhh the massive cable dreadlock - a hindrance in any system 😂 I know it’s probably not at practical, but you could double the cable lengths in that part of the patch, and sort of lay a large portion of that IT server’s worth of patch cables, onto the table and to the side of the case... but that’s all I can think of off the top of my head.
You could also set up preset changes on pams for alternative rhythms and then use cv to rotate them... but I could see how that may muddle things - also, the SSSR Matrixarchate is a killer programmable switch.... maybe a bit large for the system though 😞

This is so good on so many levels. Thanks, Alex.

You definitely need to look into the Noise Engineering: Variatic Sequent. It's small and works very simply and is perfect for 4/4 stuff. Minimum input with maximum interest. Add the variatic multium expander for more functionality.

I’m about 30 minutes in and have a couple thoughts about controlling Squid Salmple. You’ve got those 3 CV ins that could probably be used to switch to different samples, instead of repatching cables. My other thought is to use a switch like the boss bow tie, where you send it 16th notes or perhaps something from Euclidean Circles, with trigger outs to The Squid, and use a random voltage to select which input gets triggered.
