What If Canada Joined The USA? - Irish Girl Reacts

I had NO idea about Canada and the White House! So naughty. Also, I never knew that America proposed a unification, so there you go! And as for Canada having military protection from the USA? I feel like I kindaaaa knew that, but hadn';t heard it formally before. Suffice to say I learned a lot from this video!

"The united states and Canada, despite being two separate countries, share a lot of things. They share a border, values, geography. They trade freely, thanks to the 1987 Free Trade Agreement. The US and Canada are basically BFF, at least more so than any other two countries on earth. But what would happen, if Canada suddenly decided it was better off becoming part of the US? That’s exactly what we are going to talk about, right now on life’s biggest questions. "

To clarify... I was not referring to my boobays as traffic lights/head lights. It was a reference to the Squid Games T-shirt that I was wearing and was massively popular at the time this video went out... Maha!🙉

The US and Canada aren't compatible. We're like the young sweetheart couple that everyone thinks would be great together but at the 20 year reunion we are throwing drinks at each other.

Major-General Robert Ross led an expedition from Nova Scotia that burned down the White House and other public buildings in Washington DC." It's true that the offensive was launched from Nova Scotia, but the troops were British regulars recently dispatched from Wellington's army fighting in Europe. They weren't Canadians in any meaningful sense.

The Canadians never actually said "No" to unification. They said, "Sorry."

Never been to Canada but us and them have a little bit of a little brother, big brother relationship. They are super protective of their national sovereignty and independence, as are we. It wouldn't end well and would also be unnecessary since we're close allies.

The video doesn't mention French Canada. They'd be even more of a minority in the larger U.S. than they are now in Canada. I don't think this would sit well with them. It could lead to an independence movement (some French Canadians already want independence).

It's true that the U.S. invaded Canada in the War of 1812, but it was British troops who burned the White House, and also the capitol building. The causes of the war were complicated, and had to do with a lot more than the invasion of Canada. Among other things, Britain was at war with France, and the U.S. was selling them supplies, which led to British warships attacking U.S. merchant ships. Also, the British were impressing American civilians into their navy.

The border between the U.S. and Canada is pretty open, but it's not like the borders in E.U. countries. Labor isn't allowed to flow freely across the border. Canada is actually quite picky about letting people in to live or work there.

BTB Canadian did not burn the White House it was the British regulars stationed in Canada our militia stopped at the border. And often the US militias refused to go into Canada

The other problem with such a merger, is where will people from the US threaten to move to when they don't like the outcome of an election.

It is just not necessary to fold one country into the other. Just working out better relations would be fine. Thanks Diane 💙

LOL. "Canadians" didn't burn down the White House, the British did. I mean, there were probably a couple of Canadian colonists in the British Royal Navy raiding fleet that attacked Washington, DC; but saying "Canada burned the White House" is like saying "Wyoming landed at Normandy on D-Day."

That said, the video is correct that a merger between the US and Canada at this late date would be terrible for everyone involved.

As a Canadian who know the U.S. very well and has travel three extensively and has family there, when it comes to Canada joining the U.S. I say Oh hell no! Diane is right it would be like Ireland wanting to join the UK.

I don’t know how that would work. Too much difference politically I think. But I love our Canadian neighbors. Especially since they didn’t really burn the White House. 😉✌️❤️

In 1969, former prime minister Pierre Trudeau described the relationship between Canada and the United States in a memorable analogy.

“Living next to you is in some ways like sleeping with an elephant. No matter how friendly and even-tempered is the beast, if I can call it that, one is affected by every twitch and grunt, ” he said.

SO TRUE EVEN TODAY!!
We welcome each other as friends, relatives and visitors but no one can stay forever in either country without legal papers..!!

As an expat 🇨🇦 who has lived in the 🇺🇸 for some 46 years I would say that only a super serious emergency that affected BOTH countries could push them to join. As it stands, why mess with success?

Canadians can get work visas for the US and vice versa. Travel between the two countries has historically been as smooth as it gets, but not at EU levels.

Personally, I would not favor incorporating Canada into the US. Being good neighbors is sufficient.

I hope you have a enjoyable, fun and restful weekend. You deserve it for all the hard work you do for us.

Well, according to “Meet the Robinsons” Canada joining the US would cause it to be renamed “North Montana”.

While there was fighting along the U.S./Canadian border during the War of 1812, I cannot imagine where the creators of that video came up with the idea that Canadians burned the White House. The commander was British as were the four regiments that made up his army. That said, the reason for the burning of the White House was in retaliation for U.S. forces setting fire to the Legislative Assembly and Government House in the Canadian city of York.

And thanks as usually for the topic fair enough to get us thinking on it.

I do not see unification anytime so. Love Canada as they are. Different is not necessarily bad.
Enjoy your weekend Diane. 😊 x
