Whooping cough, also known as pertussis, is a highly contagious respiratory infection caused by the bacteria. Symptoms begin like a cold, with runny nose, fever, and mild cough, but progress to severe coughing fits, often accompanied by a high-pitched "whoop" sound or gasp, vomiting, and fatigue.
