This video from OMG (One Minute Geography) Revision looks at the use of tourism as a means of reducing the development gap. LICs have low standards of living (SOL) and a low Quality of Life (QOL) and they have to use whatever means necessary to improve the economic and social well being of people in their countries. As many LICs have not yet industrialised, they have untouched and beautiful landscapes. In addition, as a result of climatic conditions that slow down development (high temperatures and low precipitation) these countries are often ideal for tourists who want to get a sun tan in a warm climate! In Paper 2, they may well ask you to assess the effectiveness of tourism as a means of reducing the development gap. We use the case study of Jamaica, however the best geographers can apply their knowledge to different places and Mexico is an excellent example of how tourism has been used to help improve GNI and reduce the development gap.
