Trump Hopes Russia Hostage Release Will Bring Ukraine Peace Deal

President Donald Trump hailed the release of an American who had been detained in Russia, saying he hoped the move would allow the two nations to work toward ending the war in Ukraine.
Trump told reporters that Marc Fogel, a school teacher held in Russia since 2021, would join him Tuesday evening at the White House. Asked if the US had given Moscow anything in return to secure Fogel’s release, Trump said “not much.”
“No, they were very nice. We were treated very nicely by Russia, actually. I hope that’s the beginning of a relationship where we can end that war,” Trump said in the Oval Office alongside billionaire Elon Musk, who is heading an effort to slash the size of the federal government.
“Millions of people can stop being killed, millions of people,” Trump added. “We got to stop that war.”
The White House earlier Tuesday announced that Fogel, who was sentenced to 14 years in prison after being accused of attempting to enter the country with medical marijuana, had been released to Steve Witkoff, the investor serving as President Donald Trump’s envoy to the Middle East.
