Clearly Robotnik modified the Death Egg Robot to shift itself and its opponent through parallel dimensions whenever it was struck, with the intent of finding a dimension where Sonic was the one driving the Robot and he was fighting him. That way, Robotnik could land the finishing blow and finally defeat Sonic once and for all.
