Wim Wenders' 1984 French-German coproduction features a typically (for Wenders) unconventional cast, including the great Harry Dean Stanton as an amnesiac who enlists his brother (Dean Stockwell) in a search for Stanton's runaway wife played by Nastassja Kinski. Wenders brings a poker-faced European sensibility to the backwaters of America with compelling results. The stellar crew includes the cinematographer Robby Muller and music from Ry Cooder, which has proven highly influential.

The peep-show scene is arguably the most beautiful film scene ever...

Worth another look? The last 30 minutes of the movie are just utterly wonderful and moving filmmaking and acting. Worth another look....

Perhaps the best film of the 1980s. Hard to beat!

If you like Stanton in this you need to see his final movie, LUCKY. It could be one possible life for the character after PARIS, TX.

Good analysis, better than most attempts to describe this movie.

Worth another look? This film should be watched annually and be prescribed by psychologists.

Not one mention of Sam Shepard who worked on the script with Wenders, the whole project came out because Wenders had read his book Motel Chronicles. This is Wim's film, but the story and ambience is pure Shepard.
