(2007 STI) Apexi (Multi-Function) Turbo Timer Review

Показать описание
A turbo timer is a device designed to keep an automotive engine running for a pre-specified period of time in order to automatically execute the cool-down period required to prevent premature turbo wear and failure. After a period of driving when a turbocharger has been working hard, it is important to let the engine run at idle speed for a period of time, allowing the compressor assembly to cool from the lower gas temperatures in both the exhaust and intake tracts. At the same time the lubricating oil from the engine is able to circulate properly so the turbine won't burn the lubricating oil that would otherwise be trapped within the charger with the turbine rotating at high speed. With regard to modern automotive turbochargers, the need for a turbo timer can be eliminated by simply ensuring the car does not produce any 'boost' (during driving) for several minutes prior to the ignition being shut off. Most turbo timers are based on digital electronics.

Turbo timers can usually be disabled by an external switch, this is normally done using the handbrake switch, or using an automatic one.

It keeps the car running with the key out of the ignition (so you can lock it) for a predetermined time to help cool the turbo down after the car has been driven. It is not the most necessary thing on more modern turbocharged cars due to the fact that they are oil AND water(coolant) cooled. Some car even have "after-run" coolant pumps that will continue to pump coolant to the turbo after the car is off. Audi, for example uses one. Thumbs up to the OP for being a fellow STi owner.

i honestly dont know where it came from. My mechanic got it and installed it. When i went to pick up my car it was all in there. I left it all up to him. The gauges, timer, and meth set up. I knew he'd do me right

yup yup. I owe it all to Andy. He's the one who picked it out/ set it up. I like the way he hid my meth controler too; very sleeper!

no problem. If i can help people out, i'm all for it :)

i think the one in this vid is a auto meter 2 gauge a pillar pod. The newer 3 gauge one i have is glowshift i beleive. Its all pretty much the same stuff. just make sure u order the right color u want and get the right one for your car. There was drilling involved.!!

A/F wise 14.7 is where u want to be. and if ur running methanol like i am when u get on it and the methanol kicks in the number is supposed to drop to as low as say 12ish. But try to keep ur wideband at round high 14s to low 15s. Thats the optimal range.

Im a little confused by your question. U mean just shut the car off as soon as u park and just leave it? Or do u mean let the timer run and just leave it. The reason why I usually wait till the timer has run, before i lock up my car and walk away, is because I like to put my car in gear in addition to using the parking brake. In case the brake may fail having it in gear could slow or even keep the car from rolling.

say u run ur car/ turbo hard. then for whateve reason u turn the car off. The turbo is hot and there's cooling oil in it. The heat will harden the oil and the next time u go to start ur car there is a chance that the hardened oil will break off and be all up in ur turbo. It is one way the turbo can be damaged/ broken. The turbo is not needed but nice to have. Just another way to try and lengthen ur turbo life. Or just make sure u sit with ur car at idle atleast 30 secs before u shut off ur car.

The chime you are hearing is because he doesn't have his seat belt on. It will go on forever.

The air fuel ratio connects to the h02 sensor. What does the h02 sensor even display? Your a/f ratio? And I just wait for about 1-2 minutes in my car before I shut it off. I have the HKS type 0 turbo timer and they are just a gimmick. So if you are driving really hard on the highway, come off then just drive regular for 5+ minutes till you get where you need to go and hit traffic lights and stop signs and you also have the cool air rushing into the engine and cooling the engine and turbo from highway driving or driving fast. 30 seconds will not make any difference when your turbine housing is glowing cherry red

honestly i dont really know o.O I ususally just look at my boost and wideband gauges. as long as your boost is doing what its supposed to and your air/ fuel ratio is around 14.7 and does what its supposed to do when u get into the throttle then the car should be fine. If any of these are off more then likely your 02 sensor will be off too. i usually just keep the timer on 02 sensor for my pasengers to have something to look at

@2:45 the sound disappears, so can only guess whats going on.

So a turbo timer isnt for getting the "liquids" or whatever you said out.. the cars ecu is tieded to that timer keeping the engine running to cool the hotside/exhaust down so the journal bearings and thin amount of oil is cooled and not cooked heat like that .

been too lazy to do the seatbelt mod thing to stop the alerts after 6 chimes.

thanks. i replied to him the same thing 2 months ago. u can see my door closed at the beginning of the vid.

Just a thought, when you said if you are in a rush drop the e brake or whatever to cancel the turbo not just get out of the car and lock it and walk away and just let it cool off lol
